Turning biomedical innovation into real-world products is no walk in the park. Our team was fortunate to be part of the first cohort of the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) MedTech Accelerator Programme. This is a unique initiative designed to transform research innovations into viable healthcare ventures. This program provides an excellent opportunity for researchers and innovators to refine their ideas and navigate the challenges of developing and translating medical technologies, supported by co-located facilities and resources next to St Thomas’ Hospital. The program provided us with the tools, excellent mentoring, and insights needed to take the next steps in our journey of bringing optical techniques to the patient bedside for early cancer detection. Massive thanks the team who made this experience possible: Antoinette C., Nicolas Huber, Tony Kypreos, and Valentina Vitiello
🌟 Empowering MedTech Innovation at King’s College London 🌟 Reflecting on the culmination of the inaugural King’s MedTech Accelerator, I can confidently say that this programme has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. Supporting King’s staff, students, and alumni as they navigate the journey of MedTech innovation and entrepreneurship has been both challenging and inspiring. The accelerator is designed to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of our community—whether they’re academics, early career researchers, postdocs, or PhD candidates. 💡 What Makes This Programme Unique? We help participants actively explore commercialisation or licensing opportunities through: Commercialisation Training: Tailored workshops on IP, business models, funding, and regulation. Expert Connections: Strategic advisors, industry partners, and early-stage investors who provide invaluable feedback and networking opportunities. Pitch Development: Preparing participants to effectively communicate their ventures’ value at our Showcase Demo Day. Post-Accelerator Support: Connections to incubators, seed funding, and translational programmes. 📈 Why It Matters Through this programme, participants gain critical entrepreneurship skills and practical experience in commercialising MedTech. They leave equipped with the tools to navigate regulatory landscapes, define market value, and build teams capable of advancing impactful MedTech solutions. 🚀 Highlights from the Showcase Our Demo Day was a powerful testament to what happens when passion, innovation, and training converge. Seeing participants pitch their ventures to a room full of investors, industry leaders, and healthcare innovators was truly inspiring. The feedback and energy in the room reflected just how much potential this cohort has to make an impact. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to seeing the 2025 cohort exceed the bar that’s been set. If you’re part of King’s and have a MedTech idea, consider joining us on this transformative journey next year! Powered by King's College London delivered by School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering We will be posting more content in the future but for now, I leave you with the teaser below captured by the incredible Angelika Wrona 😇 Special thanks to the LIHE team: Ian Hughes, Irina Badita, Valentina Vitiello, Nicolas Huber and Sebastien Ourselin FREng FMedSci Accelerator Facilitator & mentor: Tony Kypreos Showcase judges: Nick Rodgers, Paul S Weston, Neil Roberts, Michael Ebner, Hassan Chaudhury HonFAPM, Felix Litzkow, Ekaterina Shatalina #MedTech #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #KingsCollegeLondon #HealthcareInnovation #Accelerator

How Students and Postdocs Can Choose and Contribute to Meaningful Research Projects ? Choosing the right research problem can be challenging, especially for students and postdocs. To make the right choice, stay informed about existing knowledge and the expanding frontiers of your field by attending conferences and reading the latest literature. Collaborate with your Principal Investigator (#PI) and team to understand the broader #vision and #research type that fits with the team's goals. Identify common areas of interest and leverage available resources to push the boundaries of your project. Embrace both funded and unfunded projects, as not all projects come with funding upfront. Funded research projects have clear guidelines and goals, while unfunded research projects are driven by curiosity and research interests but lack immediate funding. Pursuing both types of projects gives you the best of both worlds, working on guaranteed outcomes while pushing the envelope with novel ideas. Continuously test new ideas, conduct experiments, and refine your findings to contribute to the long-term development of your field. Leverage collaborations and capabilities, such as collaborating with other #researchers and #teams, and tap into experimental and computational resources. In the USA, general funding for projects comes from diverse sources: Government Grants like #SBIR/#STTR programs by #NSF, #USDA, and #DoE support innovation and research. Private Sector Funding includes venture capital firms, corporate partnerships, and accelerators like Techstars and Y Combinator. Loans and Incentives are available through #SBA (Small Business Administration) and green energy initiatives. Research Institutions and universities offer grants for R&D collaborations. Crowdfunding Platforms (#Kickstarter, #GoFundMe) . In India, funding for projects is available through multiple avenues: Government Grants like Startup India Seed Fund, #DST (Department of Science & Technology) grants, and #MSME schemes support innovation and entrepreneurship. Corporate Funding includes #CSR initiatives, partnerships, and accelerators like nasscom 10,000 Startups and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Incubation Cell. Venture Capital & Angel Investors such as Sequoia India, Accel, and Indian Angel Network provide equity funding. Bank Loans & Credit Schemes from #SIDBI and state-run banks support SMEs and projects. Research Grants from institutions like #DRDO, #ISRO, and #CSIR enable technological R&D. Crowdfunding platforms like Ketto and Milaap also help finance impactful projects. #ResearchDevelopment #AcademicGrowth #PostdocResearch #StudentResearch #ResearchCollaboration #InnovativeResearch #FundedResearch #UnfundedResearch #ResearchImpact #ScientificCuriosity #ResearchExploration #PICollaboration #AcademicCareer #STEMCareers #ResearchInnovation #AcademicExcellence #ContinuousLearning #ResearchCommunity #CollaborativeResearch #ScienceAdvancement

Turning an original idea into a tangible medical device or health technology solution requires seed funding. In fact, the seed funding enables individuals and small firms to prove concept feasibility, build and test a prototype, and refine the prototype into a minimum viable product (MVP). Attached is a 2-minute read illustrating how a direct $2M National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program investment helps U.S.- based first-time entrepreneurs, solo entrepreneurs, startups, and small emerging firms turn their original idea into a tangible medical device or health technology solution. By starting today, individuals and small firms can acquire the initial seed funding round, $305K, in 2025. Contact Mr. Darrell Williams today, at Dwilliams@eighteenventures.com, and learn how to start acquiring NSF SBIR seed funding. Eighteen Ventures is Portland, ME-based independent, private consulting firm. Our services include preparing startup business models and NSF SBIR proposal funding documents. #NSFSBIR, #SeedFunding, #Innovation, #Proposaldevelopment, #Healthcare, #Medical #MedTech

Public-private partnerships (P3s) between universities and property developers could reshape the future of #LifeScience #startups. Despite the challenges in navigating these partnerships, the benefits outweigh the difficulties. What stands out most to me is the potential for sustainable sector growth and the opportunity to attract students to a field they may not have considered beforehand.
