The Budget yesterday gave clarity as to whether using land for BNG or NN will lose Agricultural Property Relief and increase IHT. Subject to a Finance Act, it will not, which is encouraging news for those considering BNG and NN projects on their farmland. However, there remains no clarity yet whether Business Property Relief will also be available where activities required to run these projects would be considered to be trading, as they are for Woodland and Peatland Carbon Code This leaves, undecided also whether, payments received from these projects will be income or capital (or a bit of both). How is confidence being built in nature investment markets? 🌱 For any CLA member who is considering a nature-based project for carbon sequestration, habitat creation, flood management or a mix on their land, it is important that nature markets are robust and reliable. In her latest blog, Chief Land Use Policy Adviser Susan Twining explains how the CLA is working on behalf of members to ensure their interests are represented as nature markets are established and maintained. If like me, your watching closely our own Aus Govt's efforts in natural capital markets, you might find this a worthwhile read. The Scottsh Government has just released its own framework for a natural capital market to build on, initially, their existing peatland and woodland carbon credits. Seems they understand the need to start as a genuine carbon plus option first and they've actually committed to producing a nature investment prospectus... imagine a Govt that helps inform the market of its priorities!!! Would love to know what others think of this example? #naturerepair #naturemarkets #carbonplus

"We are going to extract the dividend from Mother Nature's legacy on the DOC estate in those areas previously called stewardship land... If there is a mineral, if there is a mining opportunity and it's impeded by a blind frog, goodbye, Freddy." - Minister Shane Jones The new NZ Government is pushing through the Fast Track Approvals Bill, which if passed, will enable 3 ministers to bypass environmental protections and public input so they can sign off on infrastructure projects. This is despite the fact that NZ has lost more bird species than any other nation in the last 1000 years, and our existing wildlife is struggling to survive as it is. Yes, we have precious resources that could potentially generate wealth and energy security from harvesting. But this is the wrong way of going about it!!! I usually try to avoid posting about politics on social media, but opposing this bill is urgent. If it passes, my generation and the generations that follow will pay the price. We will suffer tomorrow for a short-term profit today. And our biodiversity will be the pawns in this political game... But it's not too late. Submissions close this Friday 19th May. Here's how you can oppose the bill: --> Option 1: follow this link and make a submission directly to Govt: https://lnkd.in/gsb_SnGx --> Option 2: sign this submission from Forest & Bird (https://lnkd.in/gMwrRq3t) or this one from Greenpeace (https://lnkd.in/gGNSRgt4) --> Option 3: share this on your social media and tell your friends and family. --> More info on FAQs here if you're on the fence: https://lnkd.in/gs4iPeqT

What is Blue Carbon? Blue carbon credits are created by the growth and conservation of carbon-absorbing plants, such as mangrove forests and their associated marine habitat. Blue Carbon refers to the carbon stored in coastal ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. These ecosystems cover just 1% of the ocean floor but can store up to 10 times more carbon per unit area than terrestrial forests. Blue Carbon is so-called because it is stored in marine or coastal living organisms and the sediments beneath them. Blue Carbon ecosystems are vital for the health of our planet. They not only store carbon but also provide essential services such as water purification, coastal protection, and habitat for marine life. Over the past decade scientists have discovered that seagrass meadows, tidal marshes and mangrove forests are among the most intensive carbon sinks in the world. This means blue carbon offsets can remove enormous amounts of greenhouse gases. A blue carbon offset project should have its carbon credits trade at a premium. This is because of the large positive second-order effects such as the positive effects on corals, algae, and marine biodiversity (e.g. sharks, whales, sea turtles) that have been so negatively impacted by activities such as over-fishing and farming. https://lnkd.in/gZqbsVqH This is a good overview on NACs or Natural Asset Companies. I especially like how they highlighted how critical primary markets are to secure the basis of the value of the natural asset that would allow secondary investment.
