I made the jump into contracting last year. Here are my top 3 tips if you are thinking about the move away full time employment. 1️⃣ Being good at networking doesn't necessarily make you good at sales and marketing. Sure, have coffee and attend networking events, but be clear in your value proposition. 2️⃣ If you network well, you will likely end up in a position where you have multiple offers, and while it might sound great when talking to your mates down the pub, it takes some finesse. My suggestion: pick a date and make a decision on that date, and don’t look back with regret. Navigating multiple offers is difficult. 3️⃣ If you have a partner/family, share your thoughts and strategy with them. If you know you have 8 weeks' pay in the bank, it avoids panic and rash decisions at the end of your contract.
