Morning All, Saw an agency post this job this morning... "My client I am supporting is a wonderful business and the role being sourced is A HEAD OF COMPLIANCE. TO BE THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE you will be responsible for the full compliance and risk monitoring across the business AND MUST BE A HEAD OF COMPLIANCE SKILLED HUGELY AS OUTLINE BELOW." If you're not interested after reading this, I don't blame you.... I mean, if you, an agency, are supposed to engage on an opportunity to showcase it to your network and help lift an employers brand; you're not doing a fat lot for it here.... If the only way you can sell an opportunity is to SAY IT'S A WONDERFUL BUSINESS AND YOU NEED TO BE HUGELY SKILLED, I think you need to have another chat with the client.... Dig into the nitty gritty parts like the average tenure, ACTUAL reason for hire, key insights e.g funding, growth, tech stack, structure and plans! Then it becomes a lot easier for you to market the opportunity to the right people straight away. Anyway, rant over! #BeBetter

Just got off a call with an ambitious founder who’s hiring a General Counsel. They’re building an impressive FinTech platform that’s taking a fresh and innovative approach to private investment access. Like many early-stage businesses posting jobs online, their applicant pool has been saturated with profiles that don’t align—either in experience or cultural fit—for what it takes to build a strong and effective hiring pipeline. As a FinTech wealth management platform, having RIA compliance and fund formation experience would be a huge plus—especially in reducing reliance on outside counsel. That said, the founder recognizes that a strong generalist can still operationalize compliance and fund-related needs without being a niche subject matter expert. Ultimately, they’re looking for a legal leader. We also agreed on the problems with the two extremes of hiring: on one hand, the overwhelming applicant pools from public postings, and on the other, the enormous costs of executive search firms. Sitting between these two extremes is a sensible, community-driven approach to hiring—something I spend all my waking hours thinking about and optimizing. Now, after nearly a year of searching, their pipeline is exclusively filled with members of The L Suite (TechGC). And there’s plenty more to come...

I need genuine advice. Here is some context: Being that I have around 11 years of compliance analyst work under my belt in two completely different industries (MLM compliance and mortgage marketing compliance), that puts me in senior range for these sorts of roles. The difficulty I’m facing is that being a compliance analyst is pretty standard across the board, but if I don’t have the absolute exact subject matter expertise listed I’m disqualified. But really? It’s the ability to learn the subject matter you’re analyzing that matters. I can learn any subject matter you need me to which is proven by my many (and I do mean many) hobbies AND my work experience. I’ve taken on and successfully learned how to 3d print with both filament and resin printers. I know how to tuft rugs and have created some for my daughters. I can make fairy wings in various materials. I can sculpt (3d media was my focus at #UTA). I can solder and program microcontrollers and assemble little robots. I can read, draft, edit, and create company policy. I can compose an elite corp-speak email. I can be a bridge between the non-tech savvy and the geekiest of geeks. I am a master at code switching and can hold my own at a table full of folks of all ranks in a company. But you can’t say all of this in a résumé. Nor can you list ALL the things in a cover letter. And let’s be real: those app systems auto-kick nearly all résumé’s anyways. So what do I do at this point? I’ve been applying for customer service jobs, but my overqualification looks worrisome as it’s assumed I don’t intend to stay. I lost my COBRA coverage (I won’t get into that here, as that’s a long and very frustrating story) and short term insurance is insanely expensive and covers next to nothing. This alone is eating through my savings and the feelings of desperation are starting to compete with my anxiety over this. As an example, the medication my daughters take went from $10 to $90 when we started on this new insurance. I just… Hundreds of applications, and yet here I am. Still jobless. And the longer I go without a job, the harder it is to get a job. What do I do now? Who do I need to beg and plead to? How does anyone escape this vicious cycle? Help me. Please!!

I never considered hiring an outside consultant to support me when I was in-house, but I wish I had, particularly in those tough firms. Years before stage, I knew I wanted more and felt guilty for saying that out loud. I got training and certifications and attended #legalmarketing conferences. I moved up in title at each firm. Each of those steps left me wanting. Wanting something bigger, greater, more. MORE. MORE. MORE. I was searching for a purpose but didn't know it. I was looking for appreciation and meaning in my role. Hiring your own #marketing "do-er" who has gone through the exact same Big Law experiences makes all the difference. (Notice that I didn't use the word "coach," as that invokes an image of someone on the sidelines. I am on the field with you.) Sometimes, you have questions and goals you can't share with your boss or colleagues. We talk about your goals. We talk about "your more". Your sessions might be the only time all week when you are the main focus, and it's all about you. What's your more?
