As I touched on recently in my column, Scotland’s events industry has gone from strength to strength, so it was no surprise to see that the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) boss, Pete Duthie, is looking to double the capacity of the Glasgow venue. The proposal, which has been agreed in principle by the city council, comes after the chief executive said the venue was turning away “blockbuster” events as they were unable to accommodate them. To think that we’re missing out on hosting global events is disappointing, especially when you think of the events we have successfully held in the past, alongside the obvious cash boost that each one brings into the local economy. Just last week, Scotland’s sports minister suggested the Commonwealth Games could make a surprise return to Glasgow in 2026, with other potential hosts having ruled themselves out of the running. You don’t need me to tell you that the event was a great a boost to the city. However, a lot has changed since 2014 when we last welcomed the festival of sport, with the OVO Hydro having only just opened its doors less than a year earlier. Fast forward to today and the 14,000 plus capacity venue hosts more than 140 events annually. The SEC plans are to build another conference centre on the east side of the current campus, allowing Glasgow to hold two conferences of scale at the same time, ensuring we can attract those larger events that we’ve had to sadly turn away in the past. It all seems too good to be true, so what’s the catch? The proposal comes at an estimated cost of £80million, with the SEC Chief Exec admitting that he’ll need support from the Scottish Government and rely partly on public funds. He’s hoping though that the expansion to the current campus will lead to private investors coming on board. Hoteliers would be an obvious example, looking to add to the current list of hotels already surrounding the space. Interestingly there are 1,500 rooms provided by hotels such as Raddisson Red and the Crowne Plaza, to name a few, but if the campus was to hold larger scale events, the area would certainly need to double its accommodation capacity too. Hong Kong is slated to host "one mega event every two days" in the coming six months, with the city adding 60 more events to this year's line-up. I'm proud to have attended and participated in some major mega events in the past, but I doubt I'll be able to attend the remaining packed schedule as frequently in the second half of the year. The total number of mega events scheduled for 2024 now stands at 210, expected to bring in around 1.7 million travellers and contribute HK$4.3 billion to the local economy. While the variety of events is impressive, spanning sports, art, conferences, trade shows, and more, we should be cautious about over-relying on these "mega" designations. There needs to be clear criteria and standards established for what constitutes a true "mega" event - in terms of attendance, economic impact, media coverage, and overall quality of experience. The key will be ensuring these events actually drive local consumption through hotel stays, dining, and entertainment, rather than just bringing in short-term visitors. The Hong Kong government aims to play a "facilitator and director" role, while the industry needs to capitalise on the increased popularity and turn it into sustainable prosperity. It will be interesting to see how they strike the right balance and maximise the benefits of this packed calendar of mega events. Hong Kong Tourism Board

Day two of Host City 2024 got underway with a keynote address from Richard Lochhead MSP, Minister for Business. He reminded the conference that Scotland continues to be a destination for global cultural, sports and business events. “I go around the world and speak to international businesses, and get such amazing feedback about Scotland’s ability to host major events. It’s a very important dimension to Scotland’s global standing.” The first panel of the day looked at how events can inspire action towards sustainable city development. At the heart of this question is the balance between financial drivers and supporting community needs. Celine Payelle, Vice-President and General Manager, Events & Experiences, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, explained that social impact is a key priority of her organisation. “We have proven that investing in the cultural industry has profound benefits for a community.” She explained how Cirque du Soleil works with local schools, distributes free tickets to people who may not be able to afford them, and hires local entertainers and artists. “This doesn’t always make immediate financial sense, but it has a significant long-term social impact.” Joel Lavery, Strategic Lead Major Sporting Events at West Midlands Growth Company, said that the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games was the start of “bringing swagger back to the city”. He stressed the importance of political leadership in hosting big city events.”You need politicians to make brave decisions around funding and enabling events.” Billy Garrett, Director of Culture, Tourism and Events at Glasgow Life, echoed this point, saying that cultural and sporting events have been significant in bringing Glasgow out of the shadows of its industrial decline in the 1980s. “The redevelopment of the city through events has been a purposeful strategy. We have layered one event on top of another to build an enduring legacy.” Joel explained that public sector subsidies of major events are becoming more challenging. “Local authorities and governments have too much competitive pressure on budgets. So rights holders need to do more to develop commercial partnerships with the private sector.” Billy added that, regardless of the funding model, impact measurement is key. But he warned that not everything that can be counted, counts. “Other, less tangible impacts, such as civic pride, are incredibly important, but rarely part of an evaluation framework. While that is hard to measure, it must be factored in.” Joel ended the panel by encouraging delegates to think beyond social impact. “That feels like a given now. The next play is to frame as a boost for the share price of a city…its international reputation and its ability to act on the global stage, and what that then means to new inward investment opportunities.” Our thanks to Duncan Mackay for moderating the panel! #HostCity2024 #hostcity #SustainableCities #EventLegacy #CulturalImpact

All Change... New Stop London! Having taken place in London, Dubai, Istanbul, LA and Riyadh since inception, the RLI events have brought together thousands of retail real estate professionals to connect, explore and develop business opportunities worldwide through its globally-renowned deal-making forum RLI Connect and prestigious Global RLI Awards, which has recognised innovative and imaginative projects and companies worldwide. Moving forward it will be essential to continue to collaborate, exchange ideas, explore opportunities and network with industry colleagues. As you all know we had planned to take this year's RLI events back to the US in October to debut in Miami, Florida to continue building those all-important relationships. But unfortunately, we have had to make the difficult decision to bring them back to London. Despite unwavering efforts to engage the Global Retail Real Estate industry in our proposed events in Miami, it has been unsuccessful in the present climate. We appreciate that we are surrounded by a world of uncertainty at present, be it political or economy driven. The US is also a very domestic market and international expansion may not be as high a priority as other markets. This has been a learning curve for us, but we will 'never say never'. Returning to London this year's RLI Connect, in partnership with Sands Retail, will continue to bring people together but rather than one-to-one meetings, we have decided to pilot a one day Forum on the 22 October, the day before the Global RLI Awards and will aim to give greater benefit and exposure to those wishing to engage in thought provoking discussions, knowledge sharing and targeted networking. The theme for this year's event will be: 'An Era of Change -Looking at Creating New-Generation World-Class Destinations' The thinking behind our events remain the same... Useful connections when you need them most Our previous events in London, Dubai, Istanbul, LA and Riyadh, have brought together thousands of industry professionals to connect, explore and develop business opportunities worldwide... A necessity in today's world. Helping you stay on top The retail and leisure industry is exciting, dynamic and innovative and will continue to adapt and evolve to meet the rapidly changing needs of the industry. Retail real estate will reinvent itself and this is the perfect opportunity to re-think strategies and innovate... A necessity in tomorrow's world. One simple objective To help you do business in a fast-changing environment enabling you to explore new markets and develop new relationships. Celebrating excellence The Global RLI Awards 2024, on the evening of the 23 October will continue to recognise innovative and ground-breaking projects across the globe. More information on both events will be released soon...

PROS OF HOSTING A WORLD EVENT World events are not assigned to just any nation, they are hosted in countries with abilities to sustain the massive numbers of people. In the current world it's not an easy task, the country needs current technology like WiFi installations, online money exchange availability, current facilities like roads, electricity for smooth operation and enough resources like stadiums, guest rooms etcetera. However, there's an upside in hosting a world event both economically and culturally. For instance the current Olympics host, France, almost 90 percent of the unemployed citizens benefited from the event. These are some pros of hosting a world event. Boost in tourism sector With high numbers of people storming the country, extremely high demands will be posted in restaurants, travel agencies and local products. This will automatically market the country's culture and local produce to the outside world. Their cash crop, their market structures, people's way of living will be the talk of the world as people will be arriving from all corners of the universe. Job creation Having millions of people with enough money to spend clustered in one region, simply suggests there's need for more hands to accommodate the high numbers. Chefs, cashiers, waiters, drivers will be needed in high numbers. Most employers will employ local people who are familiar with how things work in the country, hence more people with income thus growing the country's economy. International attention Hosting a world event already gives a country the five star rating on matters peace. Aside from peace, there's also a five star rating that is thrown to development. Judging by the fact that the country has the capability of handling such a capacity and not experiencing inflation or food shortages is already a positive image to the outside world. This will give the investors a notification that 'there's a place to place your money.' People with money just need a place that reflects development and peace is observed. With a number of investors securing a place in a country entails quite a number of job opportunities, infrastructural development, current technology and growth economically. Infrastructural development World events demand, with no pity or excuses, a good infrastructure for easy operation. The moment a country is chosen, infrastructural development is one of the top activities a country has on their to-do list. With these pros of hosting a world event, some countries still cannot manage to embrace such benefits due to high rate of corruption and lack of funds. Saudi Arabia on the other hand believe they are economically stable, and want to have a taste of hosting a world event. They're bidding to host world cup event come 2034, and over 140 states are supporting their dream. Making major moves is not just for individuals, it goes for countries too. #worldcup #worldevents #soccer

I've attended two major real estate events this year, and I've gathered some highlights and tips to share. Hopefully, these insights will be helpful for your future event planning and networking! MIPIM Prepare for an intense yet rewarding experience. With proper planning, you can have valuable conversations and attend many interesting events. - Utilize the Delegate Directory: MIPIM’s delegate directory by RX Global is fantastic. Leverage it to make connections before and after the event. The directory is accessible from November to June, making it an invaluable resource. - Scout Fringe Events: There are numerous fringe events offering incredible networking opportunities. Identify and RSVP to these events early. Start with your usual networking groups and check out the officially supported ones on the MIPIM website. For instance, we kicked off our first day with an energizing run with the Property Sports Network and attended fabulous events by Real Estate Balance and Women in Property . -Be Ready for Networking Anytime: Maintain a positive attitude and have your elevator pitch well-rehearsed. Networking opportunities can arise anywhere – on the train, while walking between venues, or even knocking at your apartment door! UKREiiF Despite the unpredictable weather, this UK-centered event is a great opportunity to connect with familiar contacts and meet new people with relatable experiences. -Connect in Advance: The directory here isn't as refined as at MIPIM, and the messaging system could use some improvements. Start connecting with delegates on LinkedIn well in advance and follow up closer to the event. -Select Relevant Talks: With a myriad of talks available, choose those that align with your interests and set up meetings around them. Fringe events promoted on the website are also excellent for networking, but be sure to RSVP early as spots fill up quickly. -Allow Buffer Time: Schedule 20-minute breaks between talks and meetings. The event is busy, and you’ll need to arrive a few minutes early to each pavilion to ensure you can enter and leave on time for networking. Accommodation Tip: Book in advance and have a plan B with free cancellation. Our Airbnb got canceled last minute, which posed a logistical challenge. Highlights and Thanks: Panel discussion from the boroughs of London Borough of Waltham Forest Haringey Council, and Enfield Council at the EG talk Retrofit Realities – Addressing the Challenges of Decarbonizing Existing Buildings at the JLL stand with Ben Cross, Emma Hatch, Rob West, Andy Haigh Freehold LGBT+ CIC at UKREiiF 2024 with Lendlease and TFT BE News Networking Session with Davitt Jones Bould (DJB) and Caddick Developments+Moda Looking forward to connecting and sharing more insights in the future! #MIPIM #UKREiiF #Networking #RealEstateEvents All of this thanks to the invaluable support from PREACH Inclusion® (formerly BAME in Property)! Special thanks to Priya Aggarwal-Shah and Palak Jhunjhunwala.

From Vision to a Vibrant Syokimau Community The Syokimau Trade Expo & Conference, now in its fourth edition, began as a spark of inspiration in 2015. Driven by a vision to unite neighbors, showcase local talent, and build a future-ready community, the Expo wasn’t always met with immediate enthusiasm. When I first proposed hosting this event in Syokimau, the response was cautious at best—there were questions, doubts, and hesitations over what this Expo could achieve for our community. Fortunately, I wasn’t alone in this vision. John Thiongó, the then Chairman of the Syokimau Residents Association, believed in the potential of this idea and gave it his full support even amidst the doubts how this event would work. With his endorsement, I was able to rally a team of inspired members from the Welfare & Publicity Committee, affectionately called Welplicity. Together, we set out to create not just an event, but a movement that would elevate Syokimau as a place of innovation, unity, and opportunity. Our inaugural Expo was made even more special by the presence of Dr. Manu Chandaria, Kenya’s celebrated philanthropist and founder of the Muthaiga Residents Association, who served as our first Chief Guest. Dr. Chandaria shared words that have become a guiding principle for the Syokimau Trade Expo: “The future of Syokimau is yours to shape. When neighbors unite, they create a culture and destiny built on sustainability—a community others will envy and look to for inspiration.” These words lit a fire among us, instilling a shared belief that, together, we could make Syokimau a shining example of community-driven progress. Since that memorable beginning, the Syokimau Trade Expo has grown beyond our initial expectations. Each year, exhibitors, local leaders, entrepreneurs, and residents come together to share ideas and connect in a space dedicated to the betterment of our community. This year’s Expo promises to be more vibrant than ever, featuring a diverse array of exhibitors offering solutions to enhance our daily lives and encourage sustainable growth. The Expo now stands as a symbol of what we can achieve when we work as one. From local startups showcasing new products to collaborative initiatives addressing community needs, the Expo has become a hub of innovation, connection, and inspiration. It’s a unique opportunity for Syokimau’s residents and partners to embrace new ideas, strengthen bonds, and chart a course for a brighter, greener future. Thanks to our founders, the legacy of Dr. Chandaria’s vision, and the continued efforts of Welplicity, the Syokimau Trade Expo & Conference has become more than an event; it’s a celebration of Syokimau’s spirit and a testament to what we can achieve when we believe in our community.
