Invasive species such as spotted lanternfly (SLF) pose a serious threat to agriculture. SLF has already had negative economic impacts on U.S. agriculture, including heavy losses incurred by grape growers. In a 2019 study, researchers found that damages caused by SLF to Pennsylvania agriculture amounted to $42.6 million annually statewide (Harper et al., 2019). If the insects establish themselves in Ontario, it could have significant impacts on agriculture, especially Ontario’s grape and wine industry. This was an excellent session at Oxford Farming Conference. It was very interesting to hear the panels’ reflections on how to make farming more sustainable whilst still being profitable: what needed to change. 🌾 I envisaged what the landscape might look like in 2050, as a result of their thoughts. It’s quite different - I’m hoping it might be a little bit retro too. 🐝 🌳 Bring on bicropping, cover crops, long rotations, protected soil, healthy extensive livestock systems and local produce marketing. More hedges, trees, scrubby edges, restored ponds and weedy bits. I’m working hard with others to help landowners take opportunities and realise profit from these bits too - food alongside, and working with, nature. Public and private finance to fund it. Win win 💷 🌼
