We need to phase out plastics on both a large and small scale where possible. But from takeout containers to cutlery to packaging and tags, the prevalent use of disposable plastic at a company level makes it difficult for individuals to reduce their use and waste. So where do we begin?

In the world of plastics, a tale to unfold, With numbers to guide us, both cautious and bold. When it comes to food, let’s keep it clear, Five, four, one, two—these numbers are dear. Five is for PP, polypropylene’s grace, Safe for our food, in its rightful place. Four is LDPE, light and so bright, Used in our bags, it’s safe and just right. One is for PET, clear as the day, In bottles and jars, it’s here to stay. Two is HDPE, sturdy and strong, In containers for milk, it’s where it belongs. But beware of the others, they carry a weight, Numbers like three, six, and seven, not great. From PVC to polystyrene’s plight, They may leach into food, causing a fright. So remember these numbers, keep them in mind, For safe plastic choices, let’s be kind. In the realm of our food, let’s stand up and cheer, For five, four, one, two—safe choices are here!

Here’s a thought-provoking excerpt from Chris DeArmitt’s book The Plastics Paradox: "For the six #packaging categories analyzed - caps and closures, beverage containers, stretch and shrink film, carrier bags, other rigid packaging, and other flexible packaging - 14.4 million metric tonnes of plastic packaging were used in the US in 2010. If other types of packaging were used to substitute US #plastic packaging, more than 64 million metric tonnes of packaging would be required. The substitute packaging would require 80 percent more cumulative energy demand and result in 130 percent more #globalwarming potential impacts, expressed as CO, equivalents, compared to the equivalent plastic packaging."
