This is groundbreaking research! A peek into neurodevelopmental outcomes starting in the NICU. “Researchers found that Lower aEEG scores were related to infant, medical and environmental factors. Lower aEEG scores were not found to be related to infant feeding outcomes or sensory processing. However, lower aEEG scores were linked to lower global executive function, inhibition, working memory, material organization, metacognition and behavioral regulation once the children were 5-7 years old.” What if neural protection was taken seriously in the medical setting? I am over the moon to see our recent systematic review published in Age and Ageing, the journal of the British Geriatrics Society, by Oxford University Press. We investigated individual symptoms of delirium reported in studies of postoperative populations 🏥🧠 - 4,367 abstracts/titles screened 🧐 - 694 full text reviews 📄 - 62 studies included 👍 - 11,377 patients 🧍♀️ - 2,049 patients with delirium 🧠 - 78 differently described delirium symptoms 😮 Notable heterogeneity and lack of standardisation! ☑️ *READ ABSTRACT BELOW:* Part 2: Results: XRAInet, achieved a mAP score of 0.918. This result underscores its ability to accurately identify and localize regions necessitating tube thoracostomy for pediatric patients with pneumothorax and pleural effusion. In an independent testing data set, the model exhibited a sensitivity of 64.00% and specificity of 96.15%. Conclusion: In conclusion, XRAInet presents a promising solution for improving the detection and decision-making process for cases of pneumothorax and pleural effusion in pediatric patients using X-ray images. These findings contribute to the expanding field of AI-driven medical imaging, with potential applications for enhancing patient outcomes. Future research endeavors should explore hybrid models, enhance interpretability, address data quality issues, and align with regulatory requirements to ensure the safe and effective deployment of XRAInet in healthcare settings. In the Researcher Spotlight we highlight one of our researchers, giving them a platform to share their research journey, goals, and achievements. 🎓 Meet Our Spotlight: Lilly Meerts 🎓 "Hi my name is Lilly Meerts and I am 27 years old. I am a third year PhD student at CAPP. I studied Biomedical Sciences in Utrecht as a bachelor and Neuroscience and Cognition in Utrecht as a master degree. After these five years of studied we were in the middle of the COVID pandemic and therefore, I decided to join the Dutch public health service. I first worked there as a Source and Contact Tracing employee and after three months I became a medical supervisor and policy officer for the Source and Contact Tracing department. After one year I decided to further pursue my research career. I found a PhD position at the child- and adolescent psychiatry department of the Erasmus MC, in collaboration with Generation R. In my PhD I study the association between bisphenols and phthalates (chemicals commonly found in plastic products) with development of brain and behavior. I mainly hope to find out whether we need to be more careful and thoughtful when using plastic products to avoid adverse health effects and whether there might be especially the case during certain time periods, such as pregnancy or puberty. If so, my ultimate goal would be to influence health care policies. Fun-fact: you ever found a bisphenol A (BPA) free product? Think again! Most of these products contain some other bisphenol chemical like BPS, BPF, BPZ etc. which basically the same as BPA." Follow us to catch each Researcher Spotlight!

I am nothing if not passionate & committed to advancing women’s health. But, I believe that we (the we—scientists, the we-OBGYN, the we-doctors, the we-leaders of academic organizations) have failed in not sufficiently advocating & supporting & empowering doctors & scientists to focus on women’s health research; in not changing how we train #OBGYNs to become physician-scientists; in not more efficiently breaking down silos to cross pollinate clinical & research expertise to advance #womenshealth AND the place where i think we have failed the most is not *DOING* the essential research of understanding female- and sex-specific biology that undoubtedly drives health and disease for women across their lifespan. We MUST know this if we are to ever truly transform how we care and improve the lives of women. And, so this brings me to my current journey and most almost singular focus in doing that last part. But, we need the *WE*. So, let’s keep breaking down those silos, mentoring the next generation, demanding more funding for research, leveraging innovation and being unafraid to do more.
