Call for Applications: Third U.S.-Africa Frontiers Symposium Kigali, Rwanda, February 18-20, 2025 Applications are currently being accepted. Please submit your application by July 7, 2024, to be considered for this symposium. The U.S.-Africa program brings together outstanding young scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from the United States and the member countries of the African Union for a series of symposiums to discuss exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. The goal of these meetings is to enhance the scientific exchange and dialogue among young researchers in African countries and the United States, including the African science diaspora, and through this interaction, facilitate research collaboration within and beyond the region. It was an insightful session hosted by Fanuel J. Muindi of Civic SciTV, featuring our founder, Stephanie Okeyo, who shed light on the Science Engagement Funding Landscape based on our ongoing research. Key issues discussed included the lack of funding for science engagement initiatives, the insufficient recognition of science engagement by African governments, and the predominance of small or grassroots organizations in this field. Many of these organizations lack a digital footprint to showcase their work, making it difficult for them to gain visibility. Despite these challenges, there are opportunities in this space. With the growing appreciation for participatory research, many science research projects now require a science engagement or communication strategy. There is also a need for African governments to develop national structures that support science engagement initiatives. To support the science engagement environment, UTM is identifying and mapping different organizations with STEM initiatives to promote their visibility in Africa (https://lnkd.in/dtNzm7Ja). African scientists frequently ship samples abroad for analysis, resulting in significant losses. This practice hampers the development of local scientific expertise, perpetuates dependency, and drains financial resources that could be invested in building local infrastructure. Local analysis is essential for several reasons: 1. Capacity Building: Developing world-class research facilities and training scientists within Africa. 2. Talent Retention: Encouraging our brightest minds to stay and contribute locally. 3. Enhanced Relevance: Ensuring research outcomes are directly applicable to our unique health challenges. 4. Economic Growth: Keeping funding within our economies, supporting sustainable development. We need frameworks that compel researchers to conduct their analyses locally. Governments, funding agencies, and academic institutions must prioritize developing local research facilities and investing in our scientists. Investing in local capacity is not just a matter of pride—it's a strategic move towards self-reliance and sustainable progress.
