Today’s #didyouknow is a reminder on the efforts being made to push the AU’s FMP. The African Union (AU) has developed a draft continental strategy to promote the Free Movement of Persons, an essential component of the continent's integration agenda under Agenda 2063. This initiative emphasizes the importance of the African Passport as a key mechanism for facilitating mobility among African citizens. Adopted in January 2018, the Protocol to the Treaty establishing the African Economic Community aims to ensure rights of entry, residence, and establishment for individuals across member states. The strategy includes a phased implementation: starting with the right of entry, followed by residence and establishment rights. As of now, 33 member states have signed the protocol, and four—Rwanda, Niger, Mali, and São Tomé and Príncipe—have completed the ratification process. The technical specifications for the African Passport were developed in collaboration with international organizations and regional communities, marking a significant step toward realizing a more integrated Africa. In what ways could a borderless Africa, facilitated by this strategy, enhance economic growth and cultural exchange among nations on the continent?

A series of stakeholder engagement activities have been completed in the Technical Support Instrument (TSI) EUROCH project in Italy, Portugal and Spain. The project is funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM) and it aims to promote equal access and combat regional disparities in implementing inclusive education provisions across the three countries. In total, over 190 persons, including Ministry representatives and national representatives, have participated in the fieldwork. Stakeholder engagement activities included working groups, peer-learning sessions and a study visit to Sweden. The fieldwork helped identify strengths and gaps in policy and practice, based on six common themes that emerged from a prior analysis of country priorities and reports. As a technical provider in the project, the Agency will use these insights to develop a set of recommendations and measures to enhance inclusive education in each country. These, in turn, will inform the preparation of individual action plans for each project country. For more information on the project and the Agency’s TSI initiatives, visit the TSI web area https://lnkd.in/dCKtJ2g4 #EASNIE #InclusiveEducation #Education #StakeholderEngagement #EducationForAll #Italy #Spain #Portugal #EuropeanUnion #EuropeanCommission #ErasmusPlus

Did you know that Africa has a number of regional economic communities (RECs) geared toward improving integration and increasing cooperation? Such RECs are drivers of development across the continent. RECs are regional groupings of African states. The purpose of the RECs is to promote regional economic integration among the member countries within each region and through the broader African Economic Community (AEC), established by the Abuja Treaty in 1991. The African Union recognises eight RECs namely: • Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) • Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) • Community of Sahel–Saharan States (CEN–SAD) • East African Community (EAC) • Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) • Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) • Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) • Southern African Development Community (SADC). The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement recognizes RECs as the "building blocks" of the AfCFTA. Understanding these regional economic blocs is essential for businesses seeking expansion opportunities into Africa.

It’s Educational Wednesday‼️ The Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, adopted by the African Union (AU) in 2018, aims to facilitate the free movement of people, the right of residence, and the right of establishment across African countries. This initiative is integral to advancing continental integration and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). However, progress has been slow, with only four countries—Rwanda, Niger, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Mali—ratifying the protocol as of July 2022. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the AU have been working to demonstrate the benefits of this protocol, particularly in enhancing the implementation of the AfCFTA. Despite the apparent advantages, including boosting trade and economic cooperation, several challenges remain, such as the reluctance of many countries to ratify the protocol due to concerns about security and the potential strain on local economies. How might the slow ratification of the African Union’s Free Movement of Persons Protocol affect the vision of a borderless Africa and the implementation of the AfCFTA? Cultural policies in Africa are evolving to address both national and regional challenges, focusing on sustainable development, creative industries, and heritage preservation. Several countries have implemented frameworks aimed at integrating culture into broader development agendas, especially through the African Union’s Charter for African Cultural Renaissance. Key developments in Africa’s cultural policies reflect the increasing importance of #CCIs. These sectors contribute to employment, especially for young people. Institutions such as the Observatory of Cultural Policies in Africa (OCPA) play a significant role in this landscape. #OCPA provides technical support to governments for the revision and modernization of national cultural policies. This guidance ensures that policies align with both regional priorities and global frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), particularly in promoting cultural tourism, creative industries, and environmental conservation. However, disparities remain in how effectively countries enforce cultural policies, with some facing funding constraints, lacking clear institutional frameworks to nurture the arts and gaps in policy implementation.
