Imagine a project exceeding its budget by 2500%. Now, consider that the project’s sole aim is to end a human life. This is the situation in Utah, where the state is finalizing a plan for its first lethal injection execution since 2010. After encountering legal issues with an untested three-drug cocktail, Utah is now opting for a one-drug method that costs $200,000 – a staggering 25 times more than initially planned. How is Utah justifying this outrageous expense? Officials argue that the cost of fighting Honie in court over the experimental three-drug combination would be higher than the six-figure alternative. Let’s get one thing straight: executions are an egregious waste of taxpayer resources, regardless of whether they cost $7K or $200K. Utah would be far better off investing these funds in justice solutions that effectively prevent crime, rather than in costly and frequently-botched executions that fail to make us any safer.
