Folks, it's time I formally introduce myself - Big Kev O'Malley, 30-year trucking veteran and freight specialist who has been recovering from depression for the last 3 months. I'm known as 'Freight Buzz' to some and 'Old Mate' to others. I have enough stories to fill a library and I'm here to share my no-nonsense wisdom and tales about Aussie transport, freight and logistics. A bit about me: 1. I'm a veteran road warrior: I have been hauling freight across Australia since before GPS was a thing. I have navigated every road and highway, delivered everything from stockfeed, booze and bricks and have the innate ability to sniff out the best truck stop pies from 50km away. 2. I hate social media: I an a social unfluencer, but I love story telling and keeping abreast of the latest news. 3. I am politically incorrect and proud: I am as subtle as a road train at full throttle. I tell it as it is with sprinkle of sarcasm and humour. I will give you the unfiltered truth about our industry and the folk who work in it. 4. Loves a good chat: I could talk the hind leg off a donkey. Wellington Group of Companies started a lane with a new customer yesterday. Bringing on a customer in this economic climate is no easy feat; our Business Development team did a great job. The Friday before this new lane started, I joined our VP of Ops (Matthew Russ) and one of our Professional Drivers to meet with the customer. We were able to tour their site, ask questions and truly understand the work that we would be doing. Yesterday, our Driver Recruitment/Retention Manager (Jessica Mata) joined our driver for the first day of this new business. This is an added level of support for our Driver, but also helps our recruitment team because she can see firsthand what goes into the job. I was at the Global SOF Foundation Show in Tampa FL recently and saw this display in the Atlantic Signal booth This was a pretty powerful statement considering what the show was about, who the vendors were and who the projected clients were It really made me stop and think about how many times we choose sub-par performance on a routine basis and the costs associated with those choices Look at the difference in quality in hand tools for example: A Harbor Freight Tool isn't the same quality as Snap-on - the prices also reflect this It is no different with many items and services Many times a cheaper version may be ok and get things done, but when things really matter - choosing quality that costs a little more up front may make a huge difference... Choosing a quality item or service for most of us is not a Life or Death decision - but it could be impactful on our business or in other areas of life Choosing a licensed Pest Control company that buys their supplies from Walmart instead of professional products may be ok for awhile... In my industry, choosing a cheap carrier may be ok many times - until their lack of service hurts your relationship with your customers and costs you business... or gets you pulled into a major lawsuit... I travel a fair amount of the time and stay in a lot of different hotels - just because they all provide a bed doesn't make them all the same... I love Ice Cream - Store Brand is not the same as Blue Bell Creameries!! Whatever we do, we need to look at the total cost of our decisions and not just the upfront costs and make an informed decision Just don't be fooled into thinking everyone or everything in an industry is the same - there are quality and budget items and people in every area Choosing a quality trucking company as a partner instead of trying to find the cheapest deal may be more expensive up front, but the alternative may cost you customers and even more money in the long-run As this display reminds us, choosing 2nd Best may be costly - maybe not with our lives but in one way or another #ilovewhatIdo #othersfirst Bennett Family of Companies #Trucking #beallyoucanbe
