𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁. It’s always interesting to see variations across different locations for the same services. For the traveller, the Uber or Grab or other ride-hailing equivalent that you’re used to can be quite different overseas. Some things I’ve come across when using ride-hailing services in other countries: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 - Good local knowledge; drivers navigating past congestion using alternate routes. - Good local knowledge; drivers giving “quick-and-dirty” location briefs, e.g. on ongoing protests. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁-𝗦𝗼-𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 - Missing seat belts for the backseats. - Non-functional air conditioning. - Rundown outward vehicle appearance; worn vehicle interior. - Distracted driving, driving with sudden braking. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 - Drivers leaving their vehicles with the engines running to buy a quick coffee or to take a piss by the road. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 that standards are uniform in any particular location. I have come across good and not-so-great examples everywhere, in varying degrees. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 is that for travel security, be careful about giving a one-size-fits-all recommendation, e.g. defaulting to a particular ride-hailing service. While this is convenient, it can be problematic in locations where local standards diverge too far from what travellers are used to, and/or the company’s risk appetite. It is important to gain an appreciation of the ground truth, either through personal experience (𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩), or through a trusted source. This will inform more nuanced recommendations, and help manage expectations all around. #ridehailing #groundtransport #travelsecurity
