Last week we held a new meeting of the InterGenic Consortium, it was a success and marked significant progress towards the development of comprehensive learning modules for mentors, young people and senior citizens. Opinions are often mixed, and at times, candidates may not have the liberty to choose between the two. To explore this, I’ve developed the Mentor-Institution Matrix, with the vertical axis representing mentorship (Challenging vs. Supportive) and the horizontal axis representing institutions (Prestigious vs. Lesser-Known). Let’s break it down: 1️⃣ Thrivers (Supportive Mentor, Prestigious Institution) A dream combo! Leverage both mentorship and institutional reputation to maximize opportunities and flourish. 2️⃣ Resilients (Supportive Mentor, Lesser-Known Institution) With strong mentorship, focus on building visibility—collaborate actively, attend events, and expand your network. 3️⃣ Navigators (Challenging Mentor, Prestigious Institution) Use the institution’s resources and reputation. Seek informal mentors, focus on independent learning, and stay persistent. 4️⃣ Survivors (Challenging Mentor, Lesser-Known Institution) The toughest quadrant, but not impossible. Create your own path by building external networks, leveraging online resources, and producing high-impact work. Be ready to explore postdoctoral opportunities at reputed institutions. No matter where you are or whom you work with, you can still carve out a successful academic career. Adapt, work hard, and focus on thriving despite the circumstances.
