Fascinating article this morning in Renewable Energy World about the expected shift from today's standard grid following inverters in solar applications to grid forming inverters in the future (see link below in comments). As the generation mix on the grid shifts towards more inverter-based generation (solar, wind, storage), a new approach to maintaining voltage, frequency, and stability will be needed. More sophisticated inverters can fill the void. Energy storage systems, which already use grid forming inverters in microgrid applications, will be especially helpful in the grid of tomorrow. This kind of development is particularly interesting because it reinforces several key themes that have been influential in the energy transition: - The constant evolution of technology. - The complexities of managing the electric grid, which is both massive and increasingly critical to day-to-day life. - The key role that public policy plays; we often think about incentives and trade policy, but basic research and development may be the most important aspect role played by the public sector. One key question I have is whether a shift to grid-forming inverters will simplify power system studies and speed up the interconnection process? Understanding K-Factor Transformers: The Key to Efficient Power Systems in BESS, Solar, and Inverter Applications Application-Specific Recommendations BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems): These systems typically involve high harmonic content during charge/discharge cycles, so a K-13 to K-20 transformer is the way to go. It will handle the extra heat generated by the harmonic distortion effectively. Solar Power Systems: For small-to-medium-sized installations, K-9 to K-13 transformers are usually sufficient.
