In an attention economy, having others' undivided attention is a rarity - whether that be a client, a colleague, or a prospect. As we have all become used to multitasking behind screens, the art of focusing on one task at a time is often overlooked. Today is #GlobalExhibitionsDay, and I am reminded of our Globex team here at Stax (missing Carole Boletti and others). Globex is a comprehensive report on the global exhibition industry. At its core, we spend over 500 pages advancing a simple thesis: that people want to engage face-to-face, giving their undivided attention to those present with them, through exhibitions. What can other industries learn from #eventprofs in the exhibition industry? The reason face-to-face events have not been replaced, despite all the time and monetary costs, is that it forces participants to interact and network single-mindedly, without distraction. This facilitates truly meaningful and sustainable people connections. My resolution for the 2024 #GlobalExhibitionsDay is therefore to be intentional with forging meaningful connections, giving my undivided attention to individuals I have 1:1 conversations with, whether in-person or virtual. The business events industry employs 2.6 million Americans and drives $399 BILLION in direct spending annually (source: Center for Exhibition Industry Research, Events Industry Council, and Exhibition & Conferences Alliance) ✅ Exhibitions are a sustainable way to do business: industries gather in one place over the course of several days, allowing us to manage the environmental impact. ✅ Exhibitions connect people: trade shows and other business events are community builders, bringing people together face-to-face to connect, collaborate and contribute.
