To oak, or not to oak - that is the question? In our latest blog post written by Nick Adams MW he touches on why oak is associated with so many wines and whether that’s always a good thing. Everyone keeps talking about the Baby Boomers but we don’t see many people talking about why we really have a massive amount of fruit and wine backing up into the US market? I think we all agree that we need to make changes in marketing, but isn’t there other underlying facts about how the U.S. market got to this problem? The 2020 harvest was a trigger for a LOT of things, including showing how weak our domestic wine quality and trade system was. The drop in domestic consumption was certainly exacerbated by the baby boomer drop but the domestic wine problem has more to do with sharp-fast increases in supply based on cheap importing. Certainly, producers in CA have not competed well with quality, so this fact has contributed to consumers not embracing wine more, but the ocean of wine we have is all about cheap imports. When we start facing off with this issue as “foundational”, then maybe the cheap importing pressure for domestic companies to “compete” may stop the ugly cycle of poor quality domestic wines struggling to compete with highly subsidized interntational wines. Then maybe we would see higher quality, and equal footing in fair trade for domestic wineries vs. international wineries. So many of us think we have single answers for the problems, but like Robert Joseph has stated recently, that there is a series of issues all working in a complex system that needs to be unraveled (not simply as easy as bad marketing and baby boomer consumption reliance). Thanks for stimulating the conversation Hunter Rudd ~ we definitely need more minds digging into the details and helping us all to do a better job! #wine #marketing #internationaltrade #babyboomers #winemaking #winemarketing
If only they’d listened to me back in 2020 and adopted my free digital tasting game Somm Says that last sentence wouldn’t be necessary. “Interviews with 16 California wineries about the present crisis revealed one popular theory: This may simply be a market in need of a correction. There are too many wineries in California, too many grapevines planted, too much wine being bottled for the market to bear. This is an industry that grew complacent, so accustomed to its baby boomer-dominant customer base and its old way of doing things that it hasn’t been forced to meaningfully innovate in a long time.” https://lnkd.in/eeFU6urV

📣 NEW CASE STUDY 📣 Winemaking is big business 🍇 In 2021, the United States produced over 773 million gallons of wine 🍷 In an industry where quality is everything, wineries use nitrogen to eliminate the wine's exposure to oxygen during the bottling process and for blanketing tanks, which is critical to ensure product quality. When Oregon-based winery NW Wine Company was looking to double their bottling production, they turned to Rogers for a solution that would power a much larger operation. Read the case study & watch the testimonial video: https://lnkd.in/gb_r_MrB #wineries #nitrogen #localbusiness

A good marketing move is not just to write "mis en bouteille a..." on the cork, but to make your winery memorable for this detail as well. Imagine: among a collection of corks from other wineries, yours is personalized and you can immediately remember the name 😉🍷 #marketingdigital #marketinghacks #smmmanager #smmforwine #smmforbusiness #winemarketing #misenbouteille 📸 pour @lafermedesarnaud 😘
