🌍 Reflections from the Qatar Process Safety Symposium 🌍 For the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of attending the Qatar Process Safety Symposium, where each year, I notice a growing emphasis on soft power in achieving safety excellence. This year’s theme, "Make Process Safety Personal," emphasized that the journey toward zero process safety incidents relies not only on technical skills but also on strong leadership and the right mindsets. Keynote speakers brought valuable insights into the power of leadership in driving a safety culture. Shakeel Kadri, CEO of CCPS, shared how years of experience have shaped core beliefs for effective process safety leadership. Michael Hatfield, CTP and SVP ConocoPhillips underscored that leadership’s role is to demonstrate genuine care for their teams—a critical foundation for trust and accountability. Mohammad Kazmi & Ashraf Alhasan offered thought-provoking insights into assessing safety culture and building leadership competence—essential aspects of creating a sustainable safety culture. Their perspectives highlighted how a strong safety culture goes beyond compliance, fostering accountability and proactive engagement across all levels. The takeaway is clear: as the “soft” side of safety becomes stronger, leadership in process safety must prioritize building the right culture, fostering trust, and putting people first. IN-COUNTRY CONTRACTORS SAFETY FORUM Once again had the privilege to attend the 3rd joint Contractors Safety Forum alongside  senior business leaders from leading contractors supporting various TE energy projects in Angola. These forums provide a unique opportunity for senior business leaders & their HSE representatives  sit across the table and have a very constructive debate on themes relevant to the current topical issues. This combination is a win-win as the business leaders them selves get to participate and then ensure their respective businesses align with TE HSE strategy in keeping people, assets and environment safe. The four focus areas for this forum was, - LEADERSHIP: Achieving targets without compromising safety - STOP WORK: Innovative strategies to improve ownership and accountability towards Stop Work Obligation - RECOGNITION: Improve the inclusion of people to safety organization and overall recognition strategies - REX: Improving Return of Experience ( lessons learned) to create robust reporting culture and better analysis of reported near miss occurrence We all had a very engaging workshop, brainstorming the four areas and agreed to re-convene in six months time to discuss how we progressed in these areas in our respective businesses/projects. Difficult Workplace Personalities : (1) As a Manager, if you always keep on complaining, with full of grudges like a wild dog, the problems won't get resolved.  (2) A superb Manager is supposed to guide, coach, inspire, make decision and motivate his or her Subordinates.  (3) In fact, there are abundant of Managers but very few who are Leaders.  (4) Managers also must undergo certain Management and Leadership training on yearly basis, not just sending Subordinates to training programs.  (5) There are still Managers who are furious like lions, having emotional instability, always yelling at their Subordinates in front of others  with harsh words such as stupid, lazy, moron, idiot, useless, slow learner nowadays.  (6) There are Stupid Managers of course who are actually technically incompetent and lacking management and leadership skills, have been promoted at very young age, only relying on Subordinates for delivering results. Sounds familiar?  That's why in Petronas, to become a superb Manager, it might take you 10-12 years from your entry level. Nowadays, all Technical Managers and HSE Managers must pass Technical Profesional ( Specialist) Assessment prior to being appointed as Managers.  (7) 1 classic example of incompetent Supervisor : During 1 of fire and explosion incident in 1 of Oil & Gas Plant, the Production Supervisor in charge was hiding under a ladder and crying like a baby being ignorant what to act and give instructions to his Subordinates.
