#SAF to Account for 12% of Global Aviation Energy Demand by 2050 - Insights from DNV’s 2024 Energy Transition Outlook
The aviation sector is set for a significant shift towards decarbonization, with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) projected to account for 12% of global aviation energy demand by 2050, as detailed in DNV’s 2024 Energy Transition Outlook. SAF production, which doubled between 2022 and 2023, is expected to grow even further in the coming years, supported by global policies like the European Commission’s RefuelEU Aviation Initiative.
By mid-century, aviation will claim 48% of bioenergy for transport, driven by decarbonization policies and increasing consumer demand for greener flights. While hydrogen holds potential as an additional alternative, SAF, particularly bio-based, will dominate due to its availability and fewer regulatory challenges, capturing a 22% share by 2050.
The growing market for SAF highlights a major push towards greener aviation solutions, spurred by both businesses and consumers, despite high costs and early-stage investment challenges.
