Two State Senators Provide Legislative Insights on #Swatting
This morning, Senator Cheryl C. Kagan (MD) and Senator John Albers (GA) provided legislative insights to a packed house at the National Conference of State Legislatures Legislative Summit in Louisville.
After a recent review of swatting legislation, a few interesting findings:
• All 50 states (and D.C.) have some penalty for making a false 911 call
• 33 states include some level of felony penalty, usually when the false call results in injury or death
• 21 states provide for the ability to seek restitution or reimbursement for costs incurred by responders
• In 2024, eight states enacted new laws and/or enhanced penalties for false reporting crimes
• Some states allow for increased penalties for schools, churches, government buildings, and elected officials
Great job to the Senators for highlighting an important topic for 911 and for successfully strengthening swatting penalties in their states.
