🚨 New Paper Alert 🚨 "First Description of Leucism in the Deep-Sea Angular Rough Shark (Oxynotus centrina) and the First Documented Pigment Disorder in the Family Oxynotidae" Pigment disorders are exceptionally rare among elasmobranchs, observed in less than 5% of known species, with only 14 cases documented among deep-sea species. In this paper, we present the first-ever case of leucism in the angular rough shark, as well as the first reported pigment disorder in the entire Oxynotidae family. I'm thrilled to announce that this publication emerged from the #internship program at #SharklabADRIA and two master's theses I supervised at Ghent University (IMBRSea Erasmus +). No degree is worthless. Regardless of your undergraduate field of study, you can still find and secure a fully funded scholarship/assistantship. Just do an internship program to expand the breadth of your research expertise and acquire the needed skills to diversify. That's all. With a well-defined research interest and properly crafted application documents, you can study anywhere in the world. Imagine a person with a first degree in Fisheries securing a fully-funded scholarship in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Diversify to fields with great assistantship opportunities.

I know I am a good fit for your #summerinternship, but here is how I accomplished another thing on my freshman bucket list. I never understood or took the meaning of a bucket list until I watched a movie. Even at that, I still have less grasp, but I will refer to it as a goal one aspires to achieve. As an international student, the first time I saw a research poster was during the #SEMSS2023 at Emory University School of Medicine. I was curious when no freshman presented, which may be because we were just resuming school, but either way, I became interested in doing a poster in my first year. It was a 50% goal, and I became more interested in the research laboratory. The story is long, but I'm sure you can guess how enthusiastic I was when I heard my prestigious Fisk University would host an Annual Research Symposium. I knew I would do this, but confusion and imposter syndrome set in - what if? I carried on and was engrossed in more readings and articles. The topic was : “Exploring Chromoprotein as a Feasible Selection Marker for Gene Transformation in C.elegans.” 95% was on Wednesday morning which was the day of the presentation and I was still learning instead of revising. I became tense because a group research became one man's presentation. Thanks to the course I took on Leading with a Growth Mindset, I reidentified myself and was amazed by the performance. I broke the limit and stretched beyond expectations. The most exciting part was that I became a lecturer realizing that my efforts weren't a waste. Anyways, I am interested in #researchinternships this summer, where I can expand and delve more into the intricacies of this STEM domain. IMMERSE aims to increase entry points into drug discovery careers by enhancing student participation at multiple levels on the pathway from community college to a four-year institution to the workforce.

I had a chance to attend an interactive talk session by Dr Mathew Kuttivadakkethil Avarachen, who is pursuing postdoctoral research at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) , last week on the topic 'Current Trends and Opportunities in Marine Science.'. This session was held at the Marine Sciences auditorium, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) .  The session was very interesting and insightful, as it gave me a holistic view about how to excel as a research scholar in marine sciences or sciences in general.   The key takeaways of that session were:   🎓 The need for credits for three-year bachelor degree students to get equivalency to a four-year bachelors degree to pursue higher studies abroad.   🎓 Introduced to the idea of FAIR data.   🎓The need to bolster your skill sets in data visualisation software like R, Python, etc. or data science in general.   🎓 The idea about the changing world of impact-based research.   🎓 The quintessential need for a social and ethical part or objective in your research work.   🎓The need for a basic understanding of both statistics and physics in doing research in biology.   🎓A glimpse of how AI and ML can be a game changer in the growing world of research.   🎓The importance of internships in equipping the students to be competent enough to apply for higher studies abroad.   🎓 Gave an idea about various associations and organisations, especially about the Early Career Ocean Professionals , and how they can help you build your career in marine sciences.   🎓Suggested the comparative ease in cracking CSIR Earth Sciences rather than CSIR Life Sciences for Marine Science master's students.   🎓The importance of networking and the role played by LinkedIn , X etc. in networking.   🎓The career opportunities for master's students in industry in lieu of doing a PhD.     As a whole, the session was very interactive and enriching. The session was jointly organised by the Marine Biology Alumni Association, Society of Marine Biologists, and Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). ✨ Year 2 Semester 1 is officially done and dusted! 🙌 What a ride this semester has been — definitely the busiest and most challenging one so far. With modules like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Instruments for Analysis of Biology (a.k.a. biophys), R, and Fundamentals of Management, there was never a dull moment (or an empty to-do list). From tackling mountains of content to wrapping my head around new concepts (especially in physic) it’s been a semester of growth and perseverance. 🌱 One highlight was seeing how my internship at Thomson Medical linked back to my studies. Writing about MRI and CT scans helped me better understand concepts like tomography, making my biophys module all the more rewarding. It’s moments like this that remind me of the value of connecting theory with real-world applications. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of amazing friends, you guys made the toughest times more manageable and the good times even better. 💕 Feeling incredibly fulfilled as I look back on this semester and grateful for the lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the friendships strengthened.
