THE TANKA FLOATING VILLAGE This sinicized ethnic group, found in Southern China typically live on junks in coastal regions of Fujian, Guanxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hainan, Shanghai and along the Yangtze river. They are also found in Hong Kong and Macau. Historically, the Tankas were considered as outcasts. This village has been floating on the sea for 1300 years. This is the only floating settlement in the world. The people of this community are called Tankas or Tanka People and are 7000 in number. They were sometimes termed as ‘sea gypsies’ by the Chinese and the British. Their homes are floating on the sea. These boats are equipped with living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Everything starting from weddings to funerals are held on these boats. The whole life of the people of the Tanka tribe revolves around water and fish. People of this tribe are mostly involved in the fishing trade. While many work in the salt industry some dive into the sea for pearl fishery. It is believed that the Tanka people have not set their feet on land for 1300 years. Today, many Tankas now live onshore, while some from the older generations still live on boats and pursue their traditional livelihood of fishing 🦦🎣. As a geographer and environmentalist, I find this ethnic group quite unique to the extent that their carbon footprint would be very low and their impact on #ClimateChange would be insignificant.

Derinküyü; at the center of modern-day Türkiye : Derinkuyu is the largest of the 37 underground cities in the Cappadocia region. Although its sister sites were abandoned thousands of years ago, this remains an urban nourished by inhabitants, tourism and trade. Originally, the founders referred to it as Melengübü, around 1400 BC. Even though it was established over 3000 years ago, Derinkuyu stands as one of the largest and extensive underground cities on record today.
