I think that this is perfectly reasonable given the actual regulatory intervention - requiring platforms to provide information on how they handle that information, and a distant way for the ACMA (a wet lettuce leaf as far as regulators go) is reasonable. I'd need to look closely, but I think there's ways to deal with this issue that balance free expression, the dynamic nature of evidence and public health. The ACMA could require said platforms to have information that labels misinformation and disinformation based on expert knowledge. Another is that it could require platforms to dampen engagement with content that is known to be misleading/deceptive/disinformation. People therefore retain the right to free expression, but the way that disinformation spreads like wildfire is addressed. Note: My concern is that this could be weaponised to silence criticism of things like the biomedical model in mental health. I can see some prominent mental health leaders weaponising this. There would need to be specific carve-outs to ensure this isn't weaponised.
At Croakey Health Media we're keen to hear from #publichealth peeps who've reviewed the misinfo & disinfo bill. It has a specific focus on misinfo and disinfo that undermine 'public health', defined as per below. Keen to hear your thoughts on this definition... https://lnkd.in/gBa5fw8F

So proud of Waldo B., Terece Brown, MHI and others on the team who conducted this analysis. I believe its time for work on health equity to get more tactical. How does access to digital tools or experiences with them differ across communities? Where are virtual tools offering improvements to access, and where are those tools contributing to inequities? This kind of analysis can inform specific interventions that address gaps. Are there opportunities for action you see arising from this report?
