"Now a postdoctoral researcher, Dr Bramwell presented her recently published research into drug repurposing for ageing and age-related disease...In her research, Dr Bramwell used entirely animal-free, human-relevant methods...Human-relevant research, Dr Bramwell argued, has the potential to waste fewer resources, get safer medicines to market quicker, thereby helping more patients sooner, and all without causing animal suffering" #animals #AnimalFreeResearch #animalwelfare #3Rs #replacement #HumanRelevantResearch #research #science #biomedical #medicalresearch
Dr Laura Bramwell - our inaugural PhD student at our Animal Replacement Centre of Excellence (ARC 2.0) – showcased her animal-free research to a room of MPs and Peers, illustrating the effectiveness of human-relevant techniques to policymakers. It was inspiring to hear Animal Free Research UK-funded science being presented and discussed in Parliament – where change can truly be made. As Laura stated, the economic and health challenges presented by the longer lives we are all expected to lead demand efficient and relevant medical research, calling for real innovation in the sector. It’s time for progress. For patients, for animals, and for our economy, we need to shift gear. Imperial College London recently launched its renewed Culture of Care strategy to guide the next ten years of animal research. This new framework will guide continued implementation of the 3Rs - replacement, reduction and refinement of the use of animals - as well as set an example of scientific excellence, ensuring that all animals are treated with the highest level of care and that the research is conducted to the highest global standards. “As a world-leading medical research institution, animal research forms a small but vital part of Imperial’s biomedical research programme. It is important that we talk about how animal studies are conducted and regulated clearly and openly, to show how this work contributes to medical advances and to dispel misconceptions," shares Professor Mary Ryan, Imperial's Establishment Licence Holder, in an interview with Imperial. “Looking back over the last decade, I am particularly pleased to see that the Imperial Animal Research community continues to lead the way for openness and transparency.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ezDgB8UP #AnimalsinResearch #3Rs #BiomedicalResearch #MiceinResearch #ResearchSavesLives

On November 14, 2024, I had the privilege of contributing to the workshop titled Basic Skills in Laboratory Animal Handling and Experimentation at the Small Animal House facility, Sultan Qaboos University. I delivered a session on Research and Animal Models for Biomedical Studies. The workshop covered: -Ethical Guidelines for the Use of Research Animals. -Research and Animal Models for Biomedical Studies. -Research equipment available in the small animal house facility. -Types of research animals, maintenance, and breeding protocols. -Handling techniques, drug administration routes, and humane sacrifice methods. -Dissection, blood and organ collection, and preservation techniques. This event provided participants with fundamental knowledge and skills to perform ethical and effective animal-based research. We hope to repeat this workshop to accommodate more participants interested in advancing biomedical research and to include advanced topics with hands-on sessions.

More from the International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) community survey of #animalmethodsbias. 58% of respondents reported that that they were “often” or “sometimes” asked to add animal experiments to otherwise non-animal studies and 54% chose to comply with these requests at least “sometimes” in order for their manuscript to be accepted for publication. One respondent felt that “Papers with animal studies always receive more favorable reviews.” Another noted that “Some reviewers lack understanding of non-animal methods.” The lack of expertise to adequately evaluate nonanimal methods, or unfounded bias against them, can cause delays in publication or force authors to publish in lower-impact journals. When authors comply, it can result in unnecessary animal use and delay broader acceptance of nonanimal technologies. To see how these findings compare to our latest survey of 189 researchers, tune into the 3Rs Training Webinar on Wednesday, December 18th! More info and register here: https://lnkd.in/ewpf2wxq
Animal Bias in the Publication Process: Survey Insights from #IFER In our latest survey of mentors and students within the IFER community, we uncovered some surprising insights about the persistent bias favoring animal models in research. We asked three critical questions: ❶ How often are you asked to add animals to a non-animal experiment? ❷ Is the request scientifically justified? ❸ Do you comply? Here's what we found: 🔹50% feel requests to add animals are not justified. 🔹 Many report pressure to add animals, even when non-animal methods are sufficient. 🔹45.5% resisted compliance, advocating for non-animal methods despite pressure!! What does this mean for the future of research? These findings underscore the need for greater acceptance of non-animal methods in scientific research. The survey responses reveal both the barriers and the opportunities to advance human-relevant, ethical science. We can work toward a research culture that genuinely values innovation over tradition by challenging these biases and advocating for change. For skills to overcome reviewer bias, make sure to register for the upcoming webinar hosted by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine at https://lnkd.in/ewpf2wxq. #NonAnimalMethods #EthicalScience #PublicationBias #Innovation #ScientificIntegrity #3Rs #ResearchCommunity #COLAAB

Excited to announce the completion of the FELASA Accredited LAS Course (Functions A, B, C, D) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens! https://lnkd.in/df_KiSmD Over the course of this intensive training, I gained hands-on experience and advanced knowledge in: 1) Handling and care of laboratory animals (mice, rats), including humane methods of handling, restraint, and euthanasia. 2) Conducting minimally invasive procedures (e.g., injections, blood sampling) without anesthesia. 3) Performing anesthesia and other techniques for minor and prolonged procedures, using models and live animals. 4) Recognizing pain, suffering, and distress in laboratory animals to ensure ethical and welfare-compliant practices. 5) Designing experimental procedures that comply with EU regulations (Directive 2010/63/EU), emphasizing the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). This certification has greatly expanded my skills in Laboratory Animal Science, enabling me to contribute more effectively to research that involves animal models while ensuring the highest ethical standards. Looking forward to applying these skills in ongoing and future research projects! #LaboratoryAnimalScience #FELASA #BiomedicalResearch #AnimalWelfare #EthicalResearch #Immunology

Database for animal-free methods: already over 2,000 entries In July 2020, the Non-Animal-Technologies (NAT) database was published with 250 entries describing research and testing methods that are free from animal experimentation. To date, the number of entries has increased eightfold, and currently, the 2,000 mark has been exceeded. The NAT Database is available to students and staff at over 340 university libraries. Additionally, it is utilized by regulatory authorities in assessing applications for animal experimentation. The database is continuously expanded and freely available. #NonAnimalTechnologies #NAT #NAMs #NewApproachMethods #AnimalFreeResearch #Database https://lnkd.in/eVxb_f72

A new study has shown that only 5% of new therapies passing animal trials were successfully approved for human consumption. The researchers looked at 367 therapeutic interventions and found that only 14 passed human clinical trials. Why? The scientists conclude that animal studies are often poorly designed, invalidating their results. They also point to "notable discrepancies in the contexts of animal testing versus human application" which can lead to less relevant results. Read the full study in PLOS Biology: https://lnkd.in/g5XWEGsM #HumanRelevant #BiomedicalResearch #AnimalTesting
