Voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels play a crucial role in generating an action potential by transitioning through specific functional states. At a hyperpolarized resting membrane potential, both channels remain closed. Upon depolarization, Na+ channels open first, allowing sodium ions to enter the cell and initiate the rising phase of the action potential. These channels then inactivate during prolonged depolarization to stop further sodium influx. Subsequently, K+ channels open, permitting potassium ions to flow out of the cell, repolarizing the membrane and restoring the resting state.
