There's a growing movement to fund and support community-based organizations to solve their own challenges—yet only 2% of philanthropic dollars actually reach local leaders. In Alliance Magazine, PHI's Rise Up highlights strategies for funders looking to expand their grantmaking to local organizations, including: provide support beyond just funding; recognize local leaders as the experts they are; build meaningful, long-term partnerships; and, shift decision-making practices to share power with communities. These recommendations—guided by insights from hundreds of Rise Up leaders advancing gender justice and equity in their own communities around the world—offer a powerful roadmap not only for the philanthropic sector, but all fields looking to more authentically build sustainable, collective partnerships for health, equity and community change. https://lnkd.in/gcHKTue6 #PublicHealthFunding #Grantmaking #LocalLeadership

We're excited to introduce our 2024 grantee partners! 🤩 This year's $6.98 million general operating support investment was awarded to 46 annual partners and 32 five-year multi-year partners. All of our grantee partners' work aligns with at least one of our four grantmaking priorities that focus on supporting downstream, midstream and upstream strategies to advance #HealthEquity and #RacialEquity. In this post, we're highlighting our Access Partners! #ReimagineHealth Systemic racism, high medical costs, and lack of culturally affirming care often make comprehensive healthcare inaccessible to our region’s community members. These organizations are working to eliminate barriers to healthcare access and emphasizing community leadership. #Congratulations to all of our 2024 grantee partners! 👏 Learn more about our #GeneralOperatingSupport grantmaking this year and meet our partners: https://bit.ly/40mZ926 Plus, stay tuned as we continue to announce this year's grantee partners across each of our grantmaking priorities!

UPD: Watch the session here: https://lnkd.in/e4sJysgP Yesterday Robert Carr Fund for civil society networks took part in the first informal brown bag session on Participatory Grantmaking "Let Communities Decide". Olga Rychkova, Senior Program Officer at RCF: "Participatory approach works. It makes grantmaking stronger by making sure funding reflects communities’ needs and is directed where it makes the biggest impact. However, good process is required. Participatory approaches lend legitimacy and credibility, but it is important to manage conflicts of interest in a robust, transparent way. Participatory approaches also take time and this time needs to be budgeted in." Coco Jervis of Mama Cash: "How did Mama Cash become participatory? We started out transition to participatory model by taking gradual steps, in close consultation with our donors, partners and communities. We piloted new processes and persuaded our partners that it is forth the effort. At it worked! We trust that communities are experts in their realities. This is our way of challenging hierarchies. Participatory Grantmaking is all about sharing power!" The discussion was hosted by Partos, together with Aidsfonds, Mama Cash and Wilde Ganzen. Stay tuned for more webinars! The Commonwealth Fund just released its 2024 report comparing health system performance in 10 countries. Despite huge investments and an amazing talent pool of healthcare professionals, America continues to be in a class by itself in the underperformance of its health care sector. Here’s an at-a-glance look at how we stack up on critical measures of quality, access and equity. How might digital and AI make our system better? The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation started in 1918 by one of America’s first female philanthropists, Anna Harkness. Its mission is to research and promote high-performing health care systems to achieve better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society's most vulnerable citizens.

With a new administration entering the White House in January, philanthropy is approaching a crucial crossroads. That is why we feel privileged to have TCC-er Jared Raynor at the Grantmakers In Health Policy Exchange 2024, sharing insights with colleagues about the work that needs to be done right now and moving forward. Some highlights from Day One: 💡 Listening to J. Nadine Gracia from Trust for America's Health discuss a blueprint for strengthening public health, which outlines six priorities for the next administration. As an #evaluator, the final priority of protecting scientific integrity resonates especially strongly. 💡 The reminder by Adriane Casalotti, Chief of Government and Public Affairs at NACCHO of the necessity of philanthropy’s voice in protecting public health agency authority from being stripped away and responding to crises. 💡 "Philanthropy can bring people together that would never otherwise sit at a table together" Irfan Hasan of The New York Community Trust. 💡 It's not just policy, but how we communicate it- David Jordan, President of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund advised that one of the most important things to think about is not simply the message, but where we deliver it. Looking forward to seeing what Day Two brings! #PublicHealth #Evaluation #Philanthropy #StrategicCommunications
