In the past week, PR/marketing professionals from healthcare companies reached out for my opinions on certain PR agencies. While happy to respond, I was upfront that my expertise is in B2B, not healthcare—and while I know the former agency landscape very well, the latter not really at all. Similarly, hiring managers asked for my feedback on candidates I 'worked with' nearly 20 years ago. While we were at the same orgs, I didn’t work directly with them, and informed them my insights would be outdated and incomplete. Lots of us give backdoor references regularly, and it’s important to be honest about the limits of our knowledge. If I don’t know enough (or next to nothing) about an agency or a candidate, I let the inquiring minds know. On the plus side, I love that more companies seem to be hiring for both agency and in-house! #pr #publicrelations #communications #careers

Career in PR, not sure? Back in 2008 when I started my journey in PR, even I was not sure. Many people who didn’t understand the industry would ask me what do you do, what’s your work profile, who’s your customer etc? And it was so difficult to explain and make people understand the role. I remember when I joined my first PR company, we used to manage a handful of clients with a very small team. Fast forward in 2024, today PR is the game changer. Every company small, big, MNCs, startups and even individuals like celebrities are hiring PR professionals. People are ready to spend huge money in promoting their brand. Though companies have cut down on hiring PR agencies, they are gradually shifting towards hiring PR professionals. For them, hiring PR professional helps in promoting their brand, managing events, socials and other communication channels. I am so glad that I chose this profession at a time when it was in a very nascent stage. Today, people are looking for experienced professionals. So if you’re not sure of your career in PR, then be sure that’s it’s a thriving career option that’s going to boom in the coming years. While the opportunities in #marketing or content might shrink with new platforms and technologies taking over, the role of #PR professionals will always be in high demand.

So frequently I see (talented!) PR professionals seeking a next role and being dead set on In-House roles only! Just wanted to share a few reasons to not limit the search and to be more open to Agency roles: -Diverse Client Exposure: Working in an agency means handling a wide range of clients across different industries. You’ll develop a versatile skill set, gain experience with multiple strategies, and build a broader portfolio than in-house, where you’re often focused on just one brand. -Fast-Paced Environment: Agency life is dynamic! If you thrive on energy, quick turnarounds, and the adrenaline of juggling multiple projects, agency PR is for you. -Creative Growth Opportunities: PR agencies foster an innovative culture. With various clients come different campaigns and challenges, giving you endless opportunities to think outside the box and stretch your creativity. -Networking Goldmine: Agencies allow you to network not just within ONE company but across a wide range of industries and media outlets. You build valuable relationships with clients, media contacts, and other professionals. -Collaborative Team Atmosphere: You’ll work alongside other PR professionals, marketers, and strategists, bouncing ideas off each other and learning new techniques every day. -Career Flexibility: Agency roles prepare you for anything! With so many skills in your toolkit, you can pivot to different sectors, industries, or in-house roles down the line if you choose to. If you're seeking your next PR role, let's connect! Message me directly and let's get the conversation started for the new year. #hiring #pr #publicrelations

I have to agree with Sarah on this. After reading this post I realized that I've had clients in a wide variety of industries, including: - government - education (K12 and higher education) - retail - nonprofit - gaming - fine arts - engineering - museums - restaurant and a true smorgasbord of civic and social organizations. To be successful as a professional communicator means to be nimble, adaptable and willing to enthusiastically embrace new clients and settings.

PR is PR is PR. With very few exceptions, if you can successfully do PR/comms in one industry you can successfully do PR/comms in any industry. So if you’re hiring a PR/comms person, prioritize things like: Chemistry fit Attitude Writing skills Work ethic Creativity Genuine interest in following the news Tenacity Agility Strategic acumen Past success Over the years I’ve worked for clients in: Travel and hospitality Architecture and design B2B B2C Non profits Museums Associations Consumer packaged goods Government and quasi-government orgs Public companies Private companies Entertainment Marketing Tech Luxury Retail And more (even a jazz dance troupe) Does it hurt to hire a specialist? No, I’m just saying that the principles are industry agnostic, and they are transferable. New media relationships can be made. So keep an open mind with candidates who check all your boxes but are coming from a different industry.

✨ Need to amplify your organization's story? Do you dream of your organization appearing on national and local talk shows? My public relations agency specializes in media relations, ensuring your message reaches the right audience through strategic storytelling. 🎯 With 24 years of industry experience, I have built relationships with journalists, editors and influencers, increasing the likelihood of media coverage. 📣 What are the benefits of working with a consultant? 1. Flexibility and Knowledge: PR consultants bring a wide range of knowledge and can handle specific projects or campaigns. We have a fresh perspective and specific skills that in-house staff may not provide. 3. Broad Network and Experience: PR consultants bring a diverse portfolio of clients across various industries. We bring established media connections and proven strategies from working with different clients, which can accelerate your PR efforts and result in more impactful coverage. Partner with me to help you and your organization shine in the spotlight. Looking forward to connecting!
