An inspirational meeting in Madrid with Juan Cruz Cigudosa, secretary of state at the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain to explore Spanish universities' powerful social and economic impact. I can share that Spain will be one of the strongest performers in Times Higher Education's forthcoming Impact Rankings, which assess universities' contribution to each of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, through their teaching, research, outreach and the stewardship of their resources. Spain has over 50 universities in the ranking, published on 12 June, and has a very strong performance overall - with particular, world-leading strengths in #SDG3 (good health and well being), #SDG8 (decent work and economic growth) and #SDG16 (peace, justice and strong institutions). This will translate into some very high world rankings positions in key SDGs in next month's Impact Rankings. I am delighted that Agencia Nacional SEPIE Erasmus Estudiar en España will be joining us for the rankings launch, and much more, at the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok next month. Be sure to visit the Spanish exhibition stand at the congress to learn more and to find out how to collaborate with Spanish universities. Join us at the #GSDCongress, held in partnership with Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand: https://lnkd.in/etGrD2C6 View the current rankings here: https://lnkd.in/eYFgvUJE Thank you to THE's Lachyn Italmazova and to SEPIE's Patricia Onieva for exceptionally fruitful conversations and collaborations. #SDGs #sustainabledevelopment #THEGlobalimapct #SDGs2030 #climateaction #socialmobility #economicgrowth

Proud to share the results of an exciting collaboration with Europeana and the Impact Centre Erasmus (ICE) exploring the impact of digital cultural heritage reuse in education🌟📚 It all kicked off with one question: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞? ..but we found that focusing solely on quantification isn’t the most important part. Our research applied a 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 to better understand the value of reusing Europeana’s cultural heritage content, particularly in educational settings. We explored innovative ways to measure impact—𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬—by delving into case studies, student outcomes, and educator feedback. With over 59 million items available, Europeana provides immense value to educators, researchers, and creatives. Ultimately, our findings pave the way for future strategies that prioritize qualitative insights, enhancing reuse and its broader social impact. Curious to learn more? The European University Association (EUA) and swissuniversities welcome the Swiss Federal Council and the European Commission’s respective adoption of final mandates for negotiations between Switzerland and the EU. Research is best equipped to preserve and advance Europe’s prosperity, security and core values when it has reliable structures for collaborating with like-minded partners in #Research & #Innovation. This is especially true with partners that have an excellent research and education landscape and share the same core values in academic freedom, research ethics and democracy. With the current geopolitical climate and growing concerns around knowledge security, it is more important than ever to focus on what we have in common instead of what divides us. The current negotiation package includes an agreement that should lead to the association of Switzerland to European research, innovation and education programmes, namely #HorizonEurope and #ErasmusPlus. In a transition phase for 2024, researchers in Switzerland can again apply for prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grants. EUA and swissuniversities underline their common aspiration for full association of Switzerland to Horizon Europe and Erasmus+, which would provide much needed clarity to the European R&I and higher education sector: https://bit.ly/3VSAnVo Josep M. 📢 Introducing speakers of the #BreakoutSession IIb at the #IAUTokyo2024 Conference! The IAU 2024 International Conference, taking place this November at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, includes seven breakout sessions on various topics of interest to the higher education community. This session will consider "Leading Values-based International Cooperation." We at the IAU look forward to hearing from the four distinguished speakers on this panel: - Emnet Tadesse Woldegiorgis, Director of the Ali Mazrui Centre for Higher Education Studies, University of Johannesburg, South Africa - Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti, Vice President for International Relations and Corporate Communication, Mahidol University, Thailand - Sandra den Otter, Vice Provost Global Engagement, Queen's University, Canada - Jane Knight, Professor, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada About the Session: The IAU advocates for fair and inclusive internationalization that encompasses and values the diverse voices of nations, peoples, and cultures worldwide. An internationalization that fosters an equitable global community and serves the common global good through circulation of knowledge and supports societal development. However, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) often find themselves having to navigate political and economic pressures that might be in contrast with this vision of internationalization. How can HEIs take on a leadership role in advancing values-based international cooperation when they are bound by ever more restrictive rules and regulations imposed by their respective governments? Learn more about the conference programme and speakers here: www.iautokyo2024.net #university #universities #highereducation #HigherEd #UniversityValues #Values #internationalization #internationalcooperation

🇪🇺🇪🇺 I had the chance to attend the "EUROPE CHANGED MY LIFE" panel discussion with my eldest son at the Study in Europe Fair. The insights shared by the esteemed panelists were truly inspiring and thought-provoking. Here are some key takeaways: Common Strive for Democracy and Human Rights: The shared values of democracy and human rights are fundamental to the European educational experience, fostering a sense of global citizenship. Personal Networks: Personal connections and relationships formed during studies abroad can be life-changing, adding a deeply personal dimension to the academic journey. Self-Development: Studying in Europe offers immense opportunities for personal growth, broadening perspectives, and enhancing self-awareness. Diversity in Unity: The unity found in the diverse cultures in international courses at European universities enriches the learning experience, promoting inclusivity and mutual respect. Hard Skills Learning: Practical skills are honed through project-based learning, debates, and the acceptance of differing opinions, preparing students for real-world challenges. Cultural Challenges: Adapting to new environments comes with its own set of challenges, such as obeying traffic rules, changing weather conditions, and differing healthcare approaches. These experiences, however, contribute to resilience and adaptability. A big thank you to the panelists for sharing their journeys: H.E. Igor Driesmans, Ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia H.E. Dr. Try Sophal Dr. Try Sophal, Director General, General Department of Science Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation of Cambodia H.E.
