The Enfold pavilion by DEOND displayed at Dubai Design Week, is a profound exploration of material innovation, sustainable design, and technological integration. Created entirely from corrugated cardboard, the pavilion’s structure and finish embody the concept of a "second skin" that adapts to the user's presence and state, merging technology with organic form. This choice of material - cardboard, a highly recyclable and renewable resource - reflects DEOND’s dedication to ecological responsibility, aligning the pavilion’s physical presence with a commitment to sustainability. The cardboard structure, meticulously designed to follow a biomimetic aesthetic, takes inspiration from natural elements, resembling a rough, spiky seed on the outside while offering a calm, regenerative experience inside. #PolyUDesign_TeachingLearning During the pandemic, public health has been increasingly emphasised, and creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone has become a hot topic. The "Immu Chaise," supported by Public Design Lab, Co-designer and project PI - Prof. Kin Wai Michael Siu and Designer - Chi Hang Paul Lo, is leather public furniture with antiviral material. It is composited with leather and other materials and has antimicrobial properties that prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms. Besides its antibacterial powers, antiviral leather is also environmentally friendly. The manufacturing process involves sustainable practices and materials, reducing environmental impact and a lower carbon footprint. We are thrilled to announce that the project has received the prestigious Green Good Design Award 2024. Designing Napata Co.’s Exhibit for the upcoming TDS Expo, The Design Show Egypt 22 - 24 May 2024, posed an exciting challenge. Our primary goal for Napata was to create an immersive "maquette" like experience, where stepping into the booth would feel like entering a magnified architectural physical model. In line with this vision, we made the deliberate choice to make the display entirely monotone. This decision aimed to provide visitors with a unique environment where Napata's products would be the sole colorful elements, accentuating their presence within the exhibit. Additionally, we were steadfast in our commitment to sustainable exhibit design principles. To achieve this, we carefully examined the lifecycle of each element, from its arrival at the expo to its post-exhibition phase, with the aim of minimizing waste production. REBLOX: One key feature was the "REBLOX wall, constructed entirely from recycled plastic building blocks. These blocks were not only environmentally friendly but also rented, allowing for their potential reuse in future events or their return to the REBLOX initiative after the exhibition concluded. Reusable Gravel: Moreover, the gravel flooring in the exhibit was sourced with post-expo plans in mind. As Napata uses gravel in crafting terrazzo molding for its products, we aimed to repurpose this gravel for its continued use. Reusable Plywood: Similarly, all plywood used in the flooring of display zones, reflecting Napata's expertise in outdoor furniture, would later be repurposed and integrated into the company's furniture-making process. Debuting at this year's @greendesignshow at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre we presented a short video 'Design Eternal'. Design Eternal showcases how the repair and reuse movement, coupled with quality, thoughtful design, can be an antidote to the fast furniture industry that feeds landfill waste (we think over 200,000 tons a year). Crucial to the movement, and celebrated here, are the makers, workshops and artisans, who's skills and knowledge breathe new life into tired and worn products. Never heard of Cre SAM? No need to worry, very few people have. The SAM was built in 2001 by the long-defunct Swiss company Cree and was intended as an emission-free city vehicle for two people. The company only built 80 prototypes and went bankrupt shortly afterward. Interesting: the outer skin is double-walled thermoplastic made from recycled polymer.
