Israel MOD Procures Advanced Communication Systems from Elbit Systems for Approximately $130M The DDR&D (MAFAT) - Directorate of Defense Research & Development at the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) announces today (Monday) the completion of a series of cumulative deals with Elbit Systems for the supply of advanced communication systems to the IDF, totaling approximately $130 million (about half a billion shekels). The contracts include the supply of thousands of advanced communication systems from the software-defined radio (SDR) family, satellite communication systems, data-links for autonomous platforms, and the expansion of regional maintenance centers operating 24/7 in support of combat forces. Additionally, over the past year, the IMOD’s DDR&D, in collaboration with Elbit Systems and the IDF, has developed innovative solutions for secure and encrypted communication adapted to the evolving needs of IDF units. These contracts are part of a broader strategic initiative led by the Director General of the IMOD, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir, encompassing a series of key procurements designed to strengthen manufacturing independence in Israeli industries and expand local production lines to support the IDF's current and future operational needs. Wednesday Call Out: Comms: The Israeli Ministry of Defense has announced that they have spent $130 million with Elbit, their internal defense contracting company in the area of advanced communications. While this might seem like a step in the right direction, as someone who has spent many weeks in country over the course of several trips post October 7th, I can tell you that most operational units be they military, kitat koninut (security forces for the communities throughout Israel), or first responders, they are missing even the most basic equipment and capabilities when it comes to comms and situational awareness. On October 7th there was a complete communication breakdown leading to a nightmare for many in need who couldn't reach or be reached by emergency security forces or first responders for over 8 hours. While there will always be a need for advancements in gear and technology, in my humble opinion this cannot be accomplished with a top down solution where there is a shaky and unsupported foundation. Israel has experienced an incredibly high and unacceptable number of blue on blue, friendly fire incidents that would have been avoidable had there been sufficient communications and C2 infrastructure in place at the Warfighter level. Having seen this first hand by being boots on the ground, it has become our mission at Fox2Sierra, LLC to support the warfighter and first responders directly with a bottom up approach by providing them with a cost effective battle tested Incident Command C2 solution that can be put in the hands of every soldier, first responder and security force operator. Our out of the box solution is designed by the warfighter for the warfighter. We have the ability to provide each soldier with a ruggedized EUD working over a dedicated encrypted secure mesh network to provide everyone with a comprehensive common operating picture where all personnel, assets and targets can be brought into one central location and information disseminated even in cellular and wifi denied austere environments at a fraction of the price that the Israeli Ministry of Defense is spending on equipment and technology that never gets into the hands of those who need it most. BAE Systems has been awarded multiple contracts worth $111 million to supply the Republic of Korea (ROK) with second-generation anti-jam, ultra-high frequency radios featuring the SATURN waveform. This initiative is a crucial part of Korea’s national communications modernization strategy, aimed at enhancing secure and interoperable command and control capabilities for both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft. The SATURN (Second-generation Anti-jam Tactical UHF Radio for NATO) waveform is designed to meet the demands of modern sophisticated battlefields, offering fast frequency hopping capabilities. BAE Systems’ next-generation software-defined radios will leverage SATURN’s advanced waveform to provide timely and accurate communications, vital for decision-making in the field. “In today’s complex and contested battlefields, superiority on the ground, in the air, and at sea is mission critical,” stated Dave Logan, Vice President and General Manager of C4ISRS at BAE Systems. “This tailored solution for the Republic of Korea will equip its forces with state-of-the-art, secure, and modern communications for a variety of tactical missions while allowing them to maintain interoperability with the U.S. and coalition partners.” The ARC-232A, a SATURN-capable software-defined radio, is designed to be upgradeable, small, and lightweight, making it more difficult to jam in complex threat environments. These radios provide optimal receiver sensitivity under severe conditions and offer a broad range of configurations to counter potential threats. With more than 100,000 radios deployed globally, BAE Systems’ communications products are known for their reliability, offering nearly double the dependability of legacy systems. The production of these radios will take place at BAE Systems’ state-of-the-art facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. BAE Systems will supply the ARC-232A radios to Korean manufacturer LIG Nex1 for final assembly, testing, and aircraft integration. This collaboration underscores the importance of advanced, secure communications in maintaining military superiority and interoperability among allied forces.
