This year there’s been a number of personal projects I’ve been working on that use AI in some form or other. But by far my most ambitious of those, is a card game called Gathering Ghouls! I’ve always held a lot of nostalgia for the non-scary, campy horror of my childhood; Gremlins, Beetlejuice, Aaaahh!!! Real Monsters. Every single Halloween special of The Simpsons quotable word for word. So at the start of the year when I began experimenting with creating an “AI influencer” that stood out from the more conventional looking versions that were trending, naturally it veered towards the greatest TV show host of all time, The Crypt Keeper! And so, Mortus was born. After playing around with him for some time I realised that, though niche, the idea had such marketing potential that I didn’t want him to just be a one off experiment. I needed a brand or product to link him with. Instead of seeking out that potential brand, in hindsight the much easier route, as always I overexerted myself and decided to create an entirely new brand. Around the same time I’d been playing around with creating AI vignettes of Jim Henson-esque horror characters that used fake trading cards as the hook for the videos, as if they were some promotional tie-in of a long forgotten TV show, a show called Gathering Ghouls. Switching the trading cards for board game cards, I set out developing the game mechanics based around the world building I’d already started for the non-existent TV show, momentarily considered that I might be in over my head, then spent the next 3 months ignoring that rational part of my brain to create backstories for another 40+ characters. Why the f*ck is my fyp covered in AI dolphins? There truly is never a dull moment over on TikTok. For those of you who aren't chronically online, but want to keep in the loop, here are the three trends that have been gracing my screen this past week. 1. I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR SYMPHONY 🎶🐬 (the girls that get it, get it). This meme combines Clean Bandit's song "Symphony", an AI image of dolphins, and text that I can only describe as grim. It's PEAK Gen Z humour, but I honestly can't even explain it. If you want to get a feel for this trend, you'll have to pop on TikTok and do some scrolling. 2. Did you know you only have 30 minutes? That's what the audio of this trend tells us, with creators lip-syncing to the sound while adding text to the screen. The crux of the joke is situations where you're running out of time, and people are getting niche with it. It really encapsulates my generation's feeling of impending doom. This is trend is perfect for if your brand has a relatable/funny content pillar. 3. Caught running from the police. Gen Z obviously have a love-hate relationship with the cops. In this trend, users are running from the camera with text stating: “I’m running from the police but I hear… *insert ultra-specific compliment.*” I haven't really seen that many brands hop on this one. To be honest, it’s nearly at the end of its cycle so if you haven’t jumped on it now, you’ve probably missed the boat. This week’s TikTok trends have to be the toughest ones I’ve ever had to describe. I mean, AI dolphins, seriously? A Goat On Stage - Why Gimmicks Only Kinda Work 🐐 Years ago, an actor I worked with saw a production that featured a live goat on stage (no, this wasn’t "Who is Silvia?"). He noted that the goat stole all the attention, diverting focus from the actors. His argument was that the goat was 'totally present,' unlike the actors. 🤔 If this is true, should we fill the stage with goats to sell out the Mark Taper Forum? 🤑 Obviously not. The goat drew attention because it was novel—a gimmick. But that novelty wears off quickly. No one pays $200 a seat to watch a petting zoo. 🐑 Once the novelty fades, we're back to the core challenge: presenting something truly engaging. There's no way around it—we need a performance that moves us as human beings. There are no shortcuts. As marketers, we can be tempted by shortcuts too. AI can help write emails, automation can time our messages perfectly, and geotargeting can find the right audience. But without a compelling story, these are just gimmicks. They might work once, but they’re unsustainable. Gimmicks aren't easy—they require creativity. But they're still the easy way out. At the end of the day, we need to tell a story that resonates. 📖✨

Regarding the future of content, the changes in consumer behavior among children aged 12 and below to favor user-generated content over material from corporate television (that includes all the large streamers) is perhaps a more urgent cause for concern than generative AI, which has gotten most of the news. In the end, the consumer determines the flow of value and consumers are speaking very loudly with their attention - on Roblox, Tik Tok, Youtube Shorts, and maybe to a lesser extent, Meta's Horizon worlds.
