"Elements of more ecologically sustainable management include increasing vegetation complexity and using mechanical rather than chemical weed control. Moreover, enriching oil palm plantations with native trees did not reduce yields compared to conventional plantations and might be a promising strategy to further increase the ecological value of oil palm cultivation. Rishi Pathania, Vice President of CSR at UPL, talks about the importance of conserving biodiversity in ensuring sustainable agriculture in this Hindu businessline article. Agricultural biodiversity not only sustains the food-based bio-resources, but it plays a vital role in maintaining a viable population of various dependent flora and fauna, that play an important role in providing nutrients, pest management and propagation of the agricultural diversity. In this, one of such important faunal species is the Sarus Crane, directly associated with agriculture. UPL's Sarus Conservation Program is focused on conserving the Sarus crane population, building partnerships with the forest department and the community, educating farmers and local communities and building capacity to sustain the conservation efforts. After 521 sensitisation programmes involving 58,665 community members including farmers, teachers and students across 40 villages the Sarus numbers went from 500 in 2015 to 1254 in 2023. “Food industry has the highest biodiversity impacts in a study of 2,300 companies” Our food systems are so heavily dependent on functioning natural ecosystems to survive. They rely on healthy soils, pollinators, clean water, *available* water and good air quality. However, the food industry is also the single biggest contributor to biodiversity decline. It would be encouraging to see greater voluntary accountability for restoring and maintaining healthy ecosystems from key “polluters”, taking into consideration historic as well as current agricultural supply chains, as a critical action to protect biodiversity and food security #biodiversity #foodsecurity #naturerestoration
