Self Defence Training From Worst Case Scenario is More Valuable
Search "self-defence" on social media, and you will be inundated with videos claiming some simple defence to some attack. "Simple Self Defence Against a Rear Choke." They show you the wrong way, wag their finger, "no," and then show you their simple defence.
Let's take the rear choke as an example. I want to pick out just one small aspect of the video, not my full opinion on this defence. This video shows "Tuck The Chin," or get your hands up and chin down to prevent it or, as he says, "slow it down." That is all well and great. As you see, the defence works perfectly since we know little pressure would be applied with a violent rear choke.
First, these videos show you in an ideal setting where you know the choke is coming. I can't think of anyone I know, some amazingly talented self-defence instructors, who, if going about their daily lives, could tuck the chin down or get their hands up quick enough if the choke is applied with any decent speed, particularly if the person is skilled in the use of violence. And it is impossible to walk around 24/7 with an awareness of reacting to a rear choke if it were to happen, lol.
It is what you do once it is applied that is critical. So, depending on where someone is in their self-defence journey, they should spend considerable time practicing from the worst-case scenario where the choke is applied in a safe but more realistic fashion where you may have dropped your guard or been caught by surprise. If for no other reason than appreciating how dangerous an attack it is. It is better to understand and feel the challenges one would face than strictly training in an environment where everyone gets free with ease, building a false sense of confidence.
Countless variables could be added to the training experience to maximize your realistic ability to defend against any attack.

Another fantastic video by Bryan Jones on EMERGENCY PHYSICAL SKILLS - joint immobilization, featuring training from the New York EMT State physical skills exam!
For our Tier 3 guards, this is important knowledge. If there's a delay in responder arrival, immobilizing an injury in a "position of comfort" can make a significant difference. Always remember to check CMS (Circulatory Motor Sensory) both before and after immobilization.
We're proud that our TIER3 SECURITY PROFESSIONALS have online access to these invaluable videos, allowing them to continuously review and enhance their skills between training sessions.

This course is coming up on July 13th hosted by @simshotmeridian ! This is a one day course that will change the way you react to those up close and personal threats.
With gunfights occurring from approximately Zero to 15 feet and about half of those from Zero to 3 feet, Pillar Training has taken a stance on how these up close and personal attacks are dealt with. Currently the normal response taught for this scenario is to create distance. The problem with this is the threat can run faster forward than you can backwards and the probability of you falling is more likely than not. This is why Pillar Training Institute has evolved and created a more successful response. This response is meeting force with force. My favorite and truest quote I know is from Mike Tyson - “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face”. Contact Threat Mitigation is the only full day live fire course that focuses on the up close and personal threats which enables you to not only protect yourself, but your friends and family as well. Sign up now to see why so many others, including law enforcement, have taken and adopted this method of how to respond to those contact distance threats.
Also, if you haven’t, listen to https://lnkd.in/gwR9WMWV for a glimpse at what people are saying about this course.

TRAIN MORE SUCK LESS
Executive Director, Office of Military Base Planning and Support for the State of New Mexico (Opinions are my own and, obviously, I do not speak for the State)
Great, short article on readiness considerations to optimize your awareness.
I always mention the need to train, train, train, but that does you no good if you are unaware of a threat.
As the author points out, readiness consists of four things:
- Having good awareness skills
- Being willing to act, defend, or even aggress a potential threat to protect others
- Being prepared by planning for worst-case scenarios
- Training and practicing
You need to start thinking about those things now, otherwise you risk freezing up when your family needs you most.
Take a look at the article to improve your readiness principles.

ACT online courses
I had the common decency of doing the ACT Box exercise on terrorist attack on Sunday so I was better informed, seeing as I have taught active shooter or MTA since 2015.
I think these online courses much like situational awareness online training are a great way to inform the general population of the risks etc but they must not become the stand alone tick box training for Active shooter, Maurading Terrorist Attack or Situational Awareness, just because it’s free.
At present security companies are slowly moving away from physical hands on training by instructors that have real life experience to classroom taught instructors lacking real life hands on experience so moving to online training is also now becoming the norm.
The online training gives you a great insight but leaves the students missing lots of answers to real time threats.
If Martyn’s Law ever gets over the line (nearly 8 years in the making) ACT online training must not be the easy option for companies to tick a box stating their staff are now trained. This is totally irresponsible by the security industry going down this route because it gives false hope that people will think they can deal with a real terrorist attack or active shooter scenario.
Situational awareness is about understanding body language, and threats on the streets that cannot be taught in a classroom, same as active shooter.
I love the concept which ACT are doing but it cannot become a tick box exercise otherwise we will get members of the general public and staff killed.
