In this episode, I focus on the importance of maintaining the tools and support that aid your recovery, particularly when improvements are noticed. Whether you’re recovering from alcoholism, coping with the aftermath of a stroke, or managing vestibular disorders, the temptation to walk away from recovery tools can be strong once you start feeling better. Today, I explore the reasons why individuals might prematurely drop essential support such as medication, therapy, and support group meetings. These include misinterpreting temporary improvement as a cure, feeling overly confident and self-reliant, the perceived burden of continued treatment, and a desire to shed the patient or recovery identity. I also discuss the risks associated with abandoning these support, including potential relapse, loss of valuable community and emotional support, and the dangers of underestimating ongoing needs for long term recovery. Moreover, I provide strategies to keep you engaged and committed to your recovery path, like regularly evaluating benefits of treatments with professionals, setting long-term health goals, educating yourself about the chronic nature of your condition, and staying actively involved in support communities. Recovery is a long-term journey that requires continuous effort and support. Today’s discussion aims to reinforce the importance of maintaining tools long-term. Learn how to sustain your progress and prevent setbacks by staying committed to the recovery process. Today I talk about control and surrender within the realms of alcoholism recovery and stroke and vestibular rehabilitation. Drawing from the poignant insights of Chapter 3 of the AA Big Book, I explore the failed attempts by alcoholics to control their drinking inevitably illustrating that alcoholism is not merely a matter of willpower but a fatal disease. Contrasting these struggles, I shift to stroke recovery and managing vestibular disorders, which I am personally navigating. The episode shares experiences of maintaining control over my environment and activities to manage symptoms effectively and encourage proper rehabilitation. From enjoyable outings with my puppies to family meals, I discuss the importance of being vigilant and knowing when to pull back to prevent symptom escalation. This episode offers a unique perspective on the need for absolute surrender in the face of alcoholism versus the strategic control required in stroke recovery and vestibular therapy. Join me as I reflect on the importance of understanding our limitations, implementing strategies, and embracing community and support in our journeys. Whether you're battling addiction or a chronic health condition, giving up is not an option. Let's stay committed and be gentle with ourselves as we navigate these paths. Four Signs That Trauma Is In You Recognizing trauma in yourself can be challenging, but here are four signs to look out for: 1. Overreacting: You express anger and aggression disproportionately to a situation. 2. Underreacting: You are overly nice to someone who mistreats you, known as the Fawn response. 3. Avoiding: You leave or avoid situations at all costs, which is the Flight response. 4. Freezing: You freeze up, shut down, and feel incapable of responding. These reactions are natural survival responses shared by all mammals. Healing begins when we face our discomfort with curiosity and non-judgment, often with the help of a knowledgeable guide. 🌟 For more insights, check out our informative and entertaining podcasts and videos on our website. Our online groups start every four weeks. Our team of skilled therapists sees individuals and works with couples online worldwide. 🌍💬
