🤳🏽 Sneak peek into the Policy Roundtable for Built Environment Startups by Startup Coalition. Infusing a policy lens to the startups innovating in the UK to impact communities across the country and beyond, as fast as possible, because they offer solutions that are better for the planet 🌍 👨🏻💻 👩🏻💼 This roundtable was an opportunity for startups in the built environment to contribute to areas that need to be prioritised when there is an opportunity for the policy to change. 🏗 Building homes, using homes and retrofitting homes is a classic example of where there is a need for overhauling materials, processes and software to reduce their impact on the environment and its people. But how do we collectively accelerate change when swimming against the tide of standards and regulations that can’t recognise innovation? 💬 On the table for discussion were: how energy performance certificates (#EPCs) can work better for the end user and drive positive change, rebalancing the electrification journey, closing the performance gap on retrofits, transparent methodologies to share case studies, open data availability, incentives for landlords to reduce operational energy. Featuring SMEs from the Imperial College London's #BetterFuturesRetrofitAccelerator: 1. Dhruv Shah from Anzen, 2. Paula Bendiek from Building Atlas, 3. Matthew Taylor from LightFi, 4. John Burley and Maddy Clifford from Q-Bot Ltd, 5. Oliver Knight from SmartShift Energy and 6. Baz Iyer from @Vulcan #StartupCoalition #BuiltEnvironment #UKSPF #Policy #Startups

<Insert humble brag>. Air Quality is one of the most challenging sectors for startups, especially in a post-Brexit UK. ❗ Funding and capital is SCARCE for new and emerging technologies. ❗ It's capital-intensive (lots of hardware, scientists, devs) so kills many-a-startup before they get anywhere. ❗ The 'buyers' are notoriously difficult; councils, government, corporates. ❗ Air pollution is intangible, even though it kills 7 million people every-year. Since October, the startups on our Breathable Cities cohort - all early-stage, seed and pre-seed companies with solutions reducing pollution and emissions in cities - have raised an incredible £4.3m in equity and grants. This beats most accelerator benchmarks, and in one of the toughest sectors, and they've done amazing. We are in a crunchpoint; we need more technologies and solutions coming to market. We have to support innovators in the space, and we HAVE to get more capital, connections with industry and support to startups fixing our air. We are looking for partners, collaborators and supporters for our second programme, so please help us fix our air. Earthshot Ventures The Earthshot Prize Chris Large Clean Air Fund Airqualitynews C40 Cities Global Action Plan
A year ago we launched #BreathableCities, supported by Impact on Urban Health. It was the world's biggest accelerator programme designed to support #startups tackling #airpollution in cities. And transform the devastating human health outcomes of poor air quality - indoors and outdoors. A year on? We are pretty proud of the results. 🥁 11 UK startups have collectively raised £4.3million in funds ..so far! 🥁 65% of our #startups are in commercial trials 🥁 We've helped deliver 32 #airquality partnerships 🥁 50% of our Founders, Engineers and Experts identify as female 🥁 Over 40% of our Founders, Investors and Speakers were #BAME And 🥁 🥁 🥁 ......95% of our Breathable Cities cohort would highly recommend a Growth Studio accelerator programme! 🙏 🙏 🙏 Thank you to all our startups, experts, investors, partners, friends and colleagues. 🚀 Scotland's Thriving Start-up Ecosystem 🚀 I've had the privilege of attending various events and witnessing first-hand the remarkable growth and opportunity of Scotland's start-up ecosystem. Here's a snapshot of what makes it stand out from the rest of the UK: 🔍 Support: Scotland's commitment to fostering innovation is evident through robust support from Scottish Enterprise and the The Scottish National Investment Bank. These initiatives provide invaluable resources, funding, and mentorship, laying a strong foundation for startups to thrive. 💡Diversity: From fintech to medtech and renewable energy, Scotland's start-up landscape boasts incredible diversity. Edinburgh's fintech prowess and Glasgow's strength in life sciences exemplify the breadth of expertise and innovation driving Scotland's start-up scene. 🎓 Talent: Scotland's renowned universities produce graduates with world-class expertise in technology, engineering, and life sciences. Scotland attracts talent from around the globe, to help stand up its start-up ecosystem with diverse perspectives and skill sets. 🤝 Collaboration: Something that stands out from the various events (none more so than Foras & Scottish EDGE) is collaboration. It is ingrained in Scotland's start-up DNA. Tewke have just closed their £2.6 million seed round to address the residential sector’s energy inefficiency, raising more than double their initial target. If you think residential energy efficiency might not be a key climate priority, the stats might shock you: Around 30% of all electricity is consumed by homes and up to 60% of this energy can be wasted. This wasted energy is estimated to be worth £4.4 billion a year in the UK alone and £1 trillion worldwide. Designed and manufactured entirely in the UK, Piers Daniell along with his experienced team have built "Tap", a sophisticated, but simple, device that can easily replace a light switch. Tap is intended to help save the energy that's lost because of our subconscious micro failings, like leaving the lights or the heating on when no one is there. “We do have our flaws, and sometimes that is being lazy,” Rowan Dixon, COO of Tewke jokes. “Tap is like a very kind parent, going around the house saving energy.” As well as raising from angels, Tewke received Innovate UK funding from the UK Net Zero Pre-Commercialisation Support Fund and the Housing Digital Innovation Award.
