🌊🌐 As an advocate for aquatic animal welfare deeply involved in the policy landscape, over the past year and a half I've dedicated countless hours to engaging in public consultations and providing international feedback to governments. 📄 Reading Max Carpendale's report for Animal Ask served as a validation, affirming our efforts at Aquatic Life Institute and highlighting the urgent need for attention to overlooked areas of animal advocacy. While the broader responsibilities of my role may limit my capacity to engage with every international consultation, this article reinforces the importance of our work in this area and the strategic approach we've adopted 🚀 👉 So, for those interested in diving deeper into this discussion and understanding the potential of strategic focus in policy advocacy, I highly recommend reading the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dtere_V3 Let's continue to strengthen our movement and make sure that no critical issue goes unnoticed or unaddressed! 💪 #AquaticLife #PolicyAdvocacy #StrategicFocus #Collaboration #AnimalRights

Volunteers are the backbone of animal welfare organizations—but what really keeps them coming back? It’s not money. The “payment” they seek is far more meaningful. • Making a tangible difference • Building community and connection • Feeling seen, appreciated, and respected • Flexibility and purpose-driven roles If we can understand and provide this “currency,” we unlock true engagement and long-term commitment. In my latest blog, I explore what motivates volunteers, why it matters, and how aligning their passions with our mission leads to a thriving community of support. Read more on why “understanding volunteer currency” is key to retention: https://lnkd.in/eiG5nxgR I’d love to hear your thoughts—how do you “pay” your volunteers and keep them engaged? #AnimalWelfare #VolunteerEngagement #Leadership #Nonprofit #Retention #Municipal

The curse of "constipation". A couple of weeks ago my colleague Glen Maxwell-Heron wrote about organisational constipation, that feeling when you just can't get anything done no matter how hard you try....... We have all been there. It affects government, the public sector, charities and business. It stifles development, erodes innovation and escalates costs. In short it reduces your organisational effectiveness and lowers profitability. So there was a great example of this last week when the Chairman of HS2 admitted that over £100 million had been spent on a “bat shed”. The problem stems from the plethora of stakeholders – public bodies and agencies – all with specific agendas supported by numerous lawyers and specialists aiming at their solution but unwilling to contribute to finding “The Best Solution”. We have supported significant change projects in the past by acting as a neutral adviser, divorced from the decision making, whose task is to act as the honest broker, the project conscience, to maintain perspective between stakeholders. One of the questions we would have asked is “Do you think that spending £100 million of working people’s income is the right solution?” and used the pause for thought as the springboard for the collaborative development of The Best Solution.

🦝 Overrun by "Raccoons"? 🦝 Ever feel like you're being swarmed by clients demanding freebies? 🙋♀️ Just like the woman in Washington who ended up with 100 raccoons at her door after years of feeding them, enterprises from major companies to solopreneurs can find themselves in a similar situation. Giving away too much for free(or too cheap) can create a dangerous cycle: 🆓 Expectation of Freebies: Clients become accustomed to getting something for nothing. 🆓 The promotion is so successful, it destroys you. Think Red Lobster and free shrimp. 🆓 Loss of Revenue: You're constantly working without proper compensation. 🆓 Opportunity Cost: You lose time and resources that could be used for paying clients. 🆓 Damaged Reputation: Free services can be perceived as less valuable. Just like those raccoons, clients can become overly reliant on free offerings. Next thing you know, they are scratching at your door, banging on the windows, jumping and surrounding your car. It's crucial to set clear boundaries and value your expertise. ✅ Yes, adding value for your clients is essential! But it's equally crucial to value your own efforts. * 👉 Remember, even charities need to generate revenue to sustain their mission.
