This is a pro tip for hiring managers who aren’t super well versed in L&D — I have been witnessing quite a few professionals advertising their skillset in L&D by focusing on experience with Pedagogy. I’ve also seen a few job listings requesting this! The problem here is that Pedagogy is primarily the study of teaching children, and the skillset does not transfer well to adult learners. You want professionals that have expertise with Androgogy, the study of adult learning. Adults learn very differently than children. There is some overlap, of course, but if you want an adult to retain the information you’re providing them in an actionable way it will require a lot of special considerations. A successful L&D professional should have some baseline understanding of Androgogy principles, as well as experience under their belt developing both front line employees and leadership. If you want a truly special experience with an L&D professional, find one who has successful experience training other L&D professionals. These are the folks who are going to take your training and education departments to the next level!
