The deadline is approaching for the Fostering Access, Rights, and Equity (FARE) grant program. Offered by the Women's Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor, and the Employment and Training Administration, the FARE program assists survivors of gender-based violence and harassment in the workplace. FARE is available to community-based organizations that support women in underserved communities and marginalized populations, educating women on their rights and benefits. Grant recipients must use the funding to: -Build awareness through educational resources on topics related to gender-based violence and harassment in the workplace. -Deliver survivor-driven strategies that prevent and reduce workplace risks and prevent gender-based violence and harassment. -Connect women workers to services, benefits, and/or legal assistance as needed, reasonable, and/or available. -Encourage women workers and survivors to advance the conversation on gender-based violence and harassment in their own communities through guided conversations, leadership circles, or other similar activities. 💬 So far, our research into disabled women's experiences of employment in Scotland has seen us engage with disabled people's organisations to understand the current landscape and existing priorities around employment for disabled women. 📖 We also commissioned a literature review on disabled women’s employment, revealing significant gaps in data, particularly Scottish-specific insights on issues like pay, employment levels, and access to training. 🔎 Through focus groups with disabled women, we've identified key barriers: inflexible work, poor employer knowledge, and discriminatory practices. Today, on International Day of Care, I join in highlighting the critical contributions of unpaid care and domestic work-so often carried out by women-and the impact it has on the lives of women. Around the world, women bear the primary burden of care: child-rearing, elder care, household duties, and community support. While this work is fundamental to the well-being of families and communities, it often goes unseen, undervalued, and unsupported. Unpaid care work inhibits education, professional advance, and financial independence. The struggle for full equality between women and men necessitates the advocacy of recognition, redistribution, and reduction of unpaid care work to ensure that women have the needed support and resources to realize decisions about their future. Let us recognize and appreciate care work, put in place policies to support carers, and work toward a future where all of us will share care work and care is given full value. #InternationalDayofCare #UnpaidCareWork #GenderEquality #womenempowerment #caregivenfullvalue

Sadly, I and many others were not surprised to see this government’s Common Sense Minister’s plan to ban jobs dedicated to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the Civil Service. Implementing plans once again under the guises of streamlining, saving public money, and simplifying, which give ministers unilateral, arbitrary powers with little to no accountability or oversight. I do not believe we need someone who can make random sweeping judgments and decisions from their own marginal field of vision and experience. We need people who understand the complexity and nuances of the challenges faced by some individuals in the workplace, someone open to voices beyond their own experience, to help make things better for everyone. Not just those that look and sound like Minister McVey. They know well how hard it is to measure often personal and intangible outcomes of EDI actions, so some ministers have chosen to label them as ‘woke’, because it is a buzzword, not because they can define what that means. If individuals could come to work without feeling bullied, harassed, or overlooked because of their ethnic background if disabled people have their access needs met and not be overlooked, if women feel confident to speak up about inappropriate behaviour and being overlooked, if people within the LGBT+ community could feel safe to be themselves and not be overlooked then EDI initiatives which tackle all of these things are to the benefit of productivity. We have to stop measuring with ineffective and short-term thinking and embrace thinking toward the long-term future of businesses and organisations. Today I'm putting the finishing touches to the slides & activities we'll be engrossed in this time next week during the first session of the Beyond Limits - Goals, Grit & Growth Programme for Women, which I'm delivering in partnership with NORTHERN IRELAND RURAL WOMEN'S NETWORK (NIRWN) and Women Breaking Barriers Northern Ireland. While this programme is relevant to any woman, it has been designed especially with parent carers in mind, and due to the funding body is available to women not in employment, education or training. If you work with women parent carers in Northern Ireland who aren't in work right now, why not point them in the direction of the programme? As a parent carer myself, I've designed the programme to help participants go: - From feeling isolated, to having a support network in the other participants. - From feeling stuck by circumstance, to feeling empowered to create the change they want. - From being constantly exhausted, to creating more space for themselves. I'll be teaching the ladies how to set big goals that actually work around their lives so that they feel confident taking the steps they need, at a pace that works for them, to achieve those goals. It won't just be a course or another thing to add to their already very long to-do lists, it'll be tools they can carry with them, an opportunity for connection with other women who 'get it', and some time for participants to think about what they want for a change. “Manifesto for Inclusion” for the General Election 2024: Ask 5: Disabled People should have the same access to public life as anyone else. The Problem: ➢ Disabled people are woefully under-represented in public life and particularly in politics. ➢ In the 2019-2024 UK Parliament only 8 MPs out of 650 (1.23%) identified as disabled people, yet we make up well over 20% of working age people. ➢ The Scottish Government’s Access to Elected Office Fund is not available to support candidates for election to the UK Parliament. Our Solutions: • The UK Government should provide financial support to meet disability-related extra costs of disabled candidates standing for election to the UK Parliament in Scotland, or fund the Access to Elected Office Fund Scotland for use by candidates standing for election to the UK Parliament. • Disability related expenditure should be excluded from a candidate’s campaign spending limits. • The UK Parliament should run a Parliamentary Intern scheme specifically for disabled people. Leading with Clarity Today is the start of a new business year and the start of something new for me. 7 months ago I stepped up to be the interim Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.  It was in the middle of what those who know the EHRC will recognise as a difficult year. My goals were clear. I needed to ensure a stable platform for our people so that they could keep delivering our important work. I also needed to bring renewed confidence and common purpose across our leadership team to be ready for and looking forward to the future. Over that time,  I am proud of the work that we have done. We have called out race discrimination against Irish Travellers simply seeking to book a holiday and highlighted the need for employers to respond properly to the needs of female employees impacted by the menopause. We have helped to highlight the tragic failure of a university to make reasonable adjustments for one of its students and we have defended someone who lost out on work because of a failure of the company to mitigate the discriminatory effects of Face Recognition Technology. And much more is planned as we start our next business plan and consult later this year on our next Strategic Plan. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not claiming personal credit for all these achievements. This was all work that was planned or in train and delivered by great teams across the organisation. But then isn’t this just what leadership is – about creating, restoring, protecting or nurturing the conditions for others to thrive and do what they need to do? Good leadership is also about being clear about the organisation’s needs at the time, knowing if what you have to offer is the right thing and knowing when you have delivered it. Having met my goals as interim CEO, I am now re-focusing on my Chief Operating Officer work to support the teams prepare for whatever is next before I leave the EHRC all together in June. A few years ago - when I was complaining that I felt some other people around me were not stepping up to the task in front of us - my good friend and coach Amanda Ridings said ‘But you know what work needs done, don’t you?’ I said ‘Yes’. So she said, ‘Go do it then!’  I don’t know yet what my next leadership work will be. However, I’m clear that I’ll know it when I see it and that it will be clear to me in part because of all that I have learned in my time at EHRC.
