Let's talk windows. Metaphorically anyway. Unlike the common metaphor for door (one door closes, another opens), windows feel more fleeting. We talk about windows with a sense of the passage of time. When a window closes, we put that chapter behind us. We don't know when the next will open. Our lives are a collection of windows opening and closing, but they never look upon the same view.
