This 1936 German cartoon envisioned the 2000 Olympics with broadcasted cheers and television cameras replacing the in-person crowds. We know this clearly didn't happen, but was the concern valid? Although it was just to local broadcast stations, the 1936 Olympics were the first to be televised. When television was still relatively new, there were genuine concerns that broadcasting live sports would reduce attendance at stadiums. Sports leagues saw attendance decrease and today's younger generations increasingly prefer to stream their sports. Today's Olympics are a global spectacle, broadcast to billions around the world. Their broadcasting rights are some of the most valuable in media, with NBCUniversal paying eight billion for the Olympics till 2032. But even though most experience the Olympics virtually, it's estimated that 15 million traveled to Paris for this year's events. Virtual cheering was not required! While the cartoon's vision of a spectator-less future may have been a fascinating prediction, but it ultimately underestimated the enduring appeal of live sports events. Nothing beats being there in-person! #olympics #tv #broadcast #serverandsky

"Unlike traditional broadcasting, which was one broadcaster talking to mass audiences, now we also have capacity to collect individual reactions,” says Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of OBS. “For me, this opportunity is fascinating because it can lead to a gradual and complete democratisation of storytelling. It can mean the virtual participation of every single person in this common human narrative. That is the Olympic Games.” https://lnkd.in/exsC5ynW #ibc365 #olympics #parisolympics
