Our new position paper is out: Shaping the Future of Finnish Innovation: The Evolution of Finnish Innovation Policy and the Path Ahead. The Finnish innovation system has been one of the global success stories. However, several challenges remain as we address the complex environmental and social issues of our time. These challenges include, for instance, inadequate systemic policies and policy mixes, poor assessment of the social impacts of innovations, and underutilized data-driven approaches. Addressing these challenges requires refocusing on the transformative aspects of our policies and the effective translation of R&D into long-term societal, environmental, and economic value. Our position paper, "Shaping the Future of Finnish Innovation," favors transformative innovation policy. Concurrently, we promote evidence-based policy-making and innovation for problem-solving. We hope you find the position paper useful. The European Commission needs to identify key strengths and weaknesses of the European innovation landscape, and how best to overcome these, Olivier Joris (Executive Manager - EU & International Affairs) at VBO FEB writes in Euronews. ⏩ The European Union's innovation performance is lagging behind competitors like the US and China, partly due to legislation that unintentionally creates barriers to research and development. ⏩ The European Economic and Social Committee proposes a solution: the "European Innovation Stress Test". ⏩ Implementing the Stress Test could offer significant benefits. It would encourage investment in innovation, leading to increased competitiveness, accelerated green and digital transitions, and ultimately, a higher standard of living for all Europeans. ⏩ The EESC urges the next European Commission to adopt and promote the use of the Stress Test. This would not only benefit the EU as a whole, but also set a positive example for member states and regions to follow. 🤝 By joining forces and removing obstacles to innovation, Europe can reclaim its position as a global leader and build a brighter future for all.
