"What is it about these 12 pictures in particular – which the gallery is describing as its “National Treasures” – that has earned them a place in our cultural consciousness?" Excited - and slightly manic - as everyone, here in London and around the UK, prepares for a birthday celebration like no other. This piece has been a highlight (except for the word "venues" which I try my hardest never to use!) https://lnkd.in/emxdx4Y2

Statement on Contemporary Watercolours by Linnea Martina Hannigan. · "As an artist, I am drawn to the fluidity and spontaneity of watercolour, a medium often associated with traditional techniques and delicate landscapes. However, I aim to push the boundaries of this perception by using nontraditional watercolour surfaces, infusing my work with a contemporary energy. The unconventional use of watercolour and inks allow for unexpected textures, layers and interactions, giving the paintings a modern feel that contrasts with the medium’s historic reputation. My process involves working on multiple pieces simultaneously. This approach enables a dynamic and intuitive flow between works. At times, I move swiftly and decisively, allowing the paint to capture a fleeting moment. In other instances, I engage more intensely with a piece, lingering to develop intricate layers and details. Through this duality—of speed and precision—I explore the tension between control and release, tradition and innovation. Ultimately, my work seeks to reframe watercolour within the context of contemporary art, challenging preconceived notions of what this medium can achieve." https://lnkd.in/gEmr7-K5

Lois Harbaugh is a maker of vessels in every sense of the word. Like a collage artist or builder, she assembles her forms from an eclectic toolbox of techniques: wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip casting, press molding, extruding, and even the delightfully low-tech cardboard “drop mold.” These diverse approaches allow her to construct shapes that are as inventive as they are evocative. For Lois, vessels transcend their functional origins. They are symbols—iconic shapes with boundless potential to carry not just objects, but also meaning. Whether expressing a narrative or indulging in playful word associations, her work thrives on a verbal undercurrent, where form meets language and sparks fly. The vessel has become Lois’ voice, a medium through which she shapes not only clay but also ideas. Her work invites us to consider what a vessel holds—physically, conceptually, and emotionally—making each piece a story, a question, or a clever turn of phrase in its own right. For Lois, joy is not just in making; it’s in making meaning. Gallery Night December 12th 6-9p

Sgraffiti, exhibited in Güterloh, DE, 2022. Sgraffiti is an interactive media façade artwork that forms an expansive collaboration with the existing graffiti works on a wall. When the sun goes down and it gets dark, the images created by code are added to the existing graffiti works. A new work is created. The elements of fluid and unclear shapes in the image move organically and dynamically, contrasting and harmonizing with the existing graffiti in clear and static forms. The image changes, distorts, and erases in interaction to the movement of the audience in the space and the noise generated by the passage of the train. In Collaboration with Jin Lee.
