𝗘𝗜𝗖 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗔 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🚀 Some launches feel almost surreal, and today is one of those. For the first time in four years, we’ve adopted the 𝗘𝗜𝗖 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 in record time – end of October! It’s a testament to unprecedented cooperation across Commission services, coordination at neuralgic points, and a shared sense of urgency to empower Europe’s most innovative ventures. The EIC's funding schemes continue to evolve to meet the needs of Europe’s innovators: 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 are here, each focused on a crucial stage of development. This year, Pathfinder and Accelerator introduce new Challenges that reflect the cutting edge, just as every year. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲? Well it has a name... 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺, 𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣 On February 29, 2024, the Commission put forward a bold new regulation establishing the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP). The message here was clear: "𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆!" The new EIC STEP Call is an immediate answer to Draghi’s report and direction, directly addressing Europe’s need for a scale-up platform that bridges the funding gap for strategic technologies. EIC appeared as an excellent "host" of this new important initiative. The journey here was intense, with pivotal moments that stand out. We had to provide a response to a clear call from the ecosystem: bridge the gap for companies scaling at the cutting edge of tech. Just a few months later, the EIC presents its first EIC STEP call, enabling 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 €𝟯𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 to catalyze 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 €𝟱𝟬–𝟭𝟱𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘆? 𝗡𝗼. 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀! We listened to Europe’s innovators and the growth imperatives they’re up against. Filling this gap isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity if we want European companies to set the pace globally. Behind the scenes, there’s been incredible teamwork – people from every level and corner of the EIC working together to make this ambitious vision a reality. We’ve aimed high, knowing that every bold move here supports the next game-changing innovation out there. The European Commission is planning to launch the first European Innovation Council (EIC) pre-accelerator calls in 2025 for start-ups in Widening countries, according to a leaked document detailing Horizon Europe calls next year in the Widening programme. The Widening programme, aimed at reducing the research and innovation gap between richer and poorer EU member states, has multiple funding instruments for individual scientists and research institutions.
