Silo operation is not as simple as it looks, there are automatic systems but our continuous physical inspection and testing of grain is very crucial. 1. The blowers should be operated only when outside temperature and humidity is low. 2. While the blowers are running make sure the upper vents are fully opened so that warm air goes out in the environment. 3. There are two types of exhaust vent installed on top of the silo, they are natural vents and forced vents, the forced vents are installed with a motorized impeller which helps to draw air from the silo forcefully. 4. We should try to maintain the temperature of grain below 35 or 30 degrees. 5. Chiller of sufficient capacity should be used to further reduce the temperature of grain to prevent developing of moulds and weevils. 6. Prescribed chemicals in the form of cakes or powder should be used as and when necessary. 7. Lab testing should be done on routine basis and results should be recorded.
