2024 marked 40 years since the formation of ACCORD (Advisory Council on Community Relations in Defence). Honored to have the opportunity to co-chair the ACCORD Employers & Business Council (EBC) with SMS Heng Chee How, along with members from the business & TAC community. Businesses play a vital role in Total Defence. They not only provide essential services to our defence but are employers of our Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) which form the backbone of Singapore’s defence. We have three key priorities at the E&B Council. One, is to get more businesses to not just pledge support for NS, but implement supportive policies and practices in their companies to allow NSmen to fulfill their operationally ready duties. Two, to work with Ministry of Defence of Singapore and employers to increase the recognition of transferable skills acquiring during NS and enhance support for the professional development of NSmen. Three, to get more companies prepared for disruptions. With the inclusion of Digital Defence as the 6th pillar in Total Defence, it is important that our businesses, big and small be cyber-ready to protect against digital threats and ensure business continuity At Singapore Business Federation, we recognized the important role we can play as the apex business chamber to mobilise the whole of business to foster a more resilient nation in the face of an increasingly complex and volatile world. There’s a saying – alone we can do so little, together we can do so much, that is so apt for Total Defence. Let's keep supporting our NSmen and strengthening our Total Defence!
