In Memoriam to FLG Partner, Eric Hall (1954-2024)
I'm sharing this letter from Lauren DeBuono, FLG's managing partner.
Eric Hall had a profound influence on his partners, colleagues, and clients. Graduating with BA from UC Davis, followed by an MBA from his beloved Vanderbilt University, Eric began his career at Arthur Andersen & Co. and then Amdahl (with a short stint at Wells Fargo), quickly realizing that the way to go for him – to build his career in finance – was to be a consultant working with a myriad of tech and life sciences clients, with a focus on finance, FP&A, creative financing and tax strategies, M&A, and ultimately IPOs. Eric joined FLG in 2006 and became a “go-to“ partner within our partnership – the partner everyone in the firm goes to “check their thinking” on a particular issue or to learn from. Eric was not only brilliant but generous with his time to both his partners and clients, exuberant in his desire to help clients learn better strategies for handling complex issues, and always someone with a willingness to help out. Eric was a kind, thoughtful soul with no personal agenda. He just wanted to help you work through an issue, and that made him feel proud.
I had the pleasure of working with Eric closely many times during my 13 years at FLG: he and I worked together on three major clients – seeing the clients through successive financings, several M&A deals, and two exits. Eric was my thought buddy – we would discuss the client issues “du jour,” and how we would resolve them. He always offered a creative approach – always well-thought-out with a desire to enhance the value for the client. He never took “no” for an answer - he would work on a strategic resolution that he felt could work for the client. For me, as his partner and colleague, he was the creative ying to my much more conservative yang.
Eric was also on the Management Committee during my tenure as Managing Partner of the firm, and he was a true example of a partner who demonstrates “love of firm.” He would always volunteer to write a blog if we needed one quickly for our Newsletter, participate in a workshop, or do a “teach-in” if we partners needed an update on a particular subject. Eric loved to teach and provide his partners and colleagues with additional knowledge to help us make better decisions for our clients, and, as such, we learned so very much from Eric. A very generous teacher.
He will be missed.
Rest in peace, Eric, our dear friend.
