S/he directs life science initiatives for Innovation Works, most notably AlphaLab Health, and sets the tone and culture of the program. This position reports to Innovation Works' Chief Strategic Operations Officer. Primary Responsibilities: General management Overall responsibilities for Innovation Works' Life Sciences program including strategic direction, staffing, budget, programs, applicant recruitment, investments, company engagement and support, mentor recruitment, and partner relationships, most notably AHN. Drive overall AlphaLab Health accelerator program, from strategy to recruiting to programming. Represent Life Sciences group and AlphaLab Health at community and partner events, through attendance, participation, and speaking. Also represent Innovation Works at national conferences or other forums convening healthcare, life sciences, or technology development leaders Represent the Life Sciences group within IW and work effectively in a collegial, cross-functional organization. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐲. - Clinical experience is table stakes. It is the first starting point. - Unsurprisingly, we get a lot of interests for GPs as they are quite versatile. 2. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭. - Startups often require something specific that isn't easy to find. - I.E. A respiratory physician with experience setting up remote patient monitoring and virtual wards. 3. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. - The startups we work with often end up choosing a candidate that meshes well with the initial scrappy culture. - We see that this matter MORE than years of experience or seniority. 4. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦. - An obvious example will be clinicians who are clinical safety officers who can assist in their DCB 0129 filings. - Having an academic skillset (designing clinical studies and writing) can really help too. 5. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝. - Sounds silly, but for more hands on projects - startups require clinicians that can spare a day a week to help with project development. - Not all clinicians have this kind of flexibility. _____________________________ But if you are a clinicians seeking out opportunities in HealthTech, You dont just need to show that you have: 1. The right clinical experience. 2. Specific helpful niche knowledge. 3. A innovative and collaborative mindset. 4. A broad skillset allowing you to contribute. 5. Anything that is worth building requires a team of dedicated individuals, each bringing to the table unique skillsets and experience. The #healthcare industry is a massive complex. Filled with its own unique challenges. Be it: 1. Regulation 2. Technical 3. Commercial It is foolish to think that any one individual has what it takes to build and scale anything of impact without the help of others. It is said that you cannot build a #HealthTech company without a clinician. But I argue that you also can't do so without a strong technical and commercial team. While it is true that #clinicians can bring to the table: - Deep clinical insights - Entry into clinical settings - Regulation and compliance knowledge - A firm understanding of clinical pathways But, it takes a lot more than that to build and scale a product. You also need: - Technical skills to build, iterate and maintain the product. - Commercial understanding on how to sell to other businesses. - Fundraising, Legal, Marketing knowledge as part of venture building. To assume any one individual is able to do all the above is madness. Yes, you can technically do so, but likely badly. 😅 And not to the level you need to be a world class organisation. _____________________________________ I had 4 brilliant calls this weekend with technologists, clinicians and #innovators. (Ravi Nar, Liz Keen, Dr Claire Ashley, Vishnu Menon) We discussed the nuances and challenges of finding the right partners to collaborate with to build HealthTech products.
