Toyota Alabama is taking a big step toward sustainability with its impressive new solar array project! ☀️ This cutting-edge initiative is set to generate 70% of the facility’s total energy usage, producing approximately 62,000 megawatt hours of energy annually. That’s the equivalent of reducing 22,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year! 🌍 How big is 22,000 metric tons of CO2? Sustainable freight goes beyond enabling shippers to curb significant volumes of CO2e emissions – it also extends to the domain of circularity. Batteries from Einride’s fleet of heavy-duty electric vehicles are being repurposed as second-life battery energy storage systems (BESS) in a stationary setting at Einride Smartcharger Stations, where they can store renewable energy and support more cost-effective charging. This new initiative from automotive industry leaders to support their suppliers in the clean energy transition sounds promising - but the devil is in the details. We hope to see this project lead to a rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity, using the power of the auto industry to decarbonize the grid as called for in the recent Sierra Club report, “DEMANDING BETTER: How growing demand for electricity can drive a cleaner grid.” Without expansion of renewable energy capacity, an initiative like this one could amount to no more than greenwashing. Toyota Motor Corporation’s inclusion raises flags for this, but we’re cautiously optimistic that these auto industry leaders are serious about decarbonizing their supply chains through the Suppliers Partnership.
