What could be more sensible and less radical than creating places where people could be happy, healthy, safe, welcome, connected and fulfilled? Seth Kaplan refers to #socialhabitats, Jan Gehl and Fred Kent might call them human habitats. Many people would call them good places or neighbourhoods. And yet, when we look around in most neighbourhoods, towns and cities, we see: 😨 Streets and public spaces that are unsafe, unsociable, uncomfortable, inaccessible, bad for local businesses, unsustainable or car-dominated. 😒 Cities, towns and neighbourhoods that are disconnected, lonely, car-dominated, unsafe, unhealthy, unsustainable or where people feel disempowered. We are a social species, so how have we strayed so far from creating social #placesforpeople. It does seem strange. #Placemaking calls for radical change, but from the bottom-up, led by local people and governments working collaboratively together to create great places. It doesn't start with expensive, top-down masterplans or sweeping strategies. It can begin with conversations, connections, but most importantly action! The complex challenges of our times require more effective and implementable approaches. Placemaking can play a role in the changes that need to happen for the future of our societies. Placemaking is one of those things my grandparents would be stunned that we now have a scientific word for something as simple, crucial and central to their lives… In my grandparents village - in the South of France - there was the Pétanque field, right in the heart of the village, surrounded by gardens and benches that people created and took care of, because they saw these places as important as their living rooms or kitchens. There was always someone to water the gardens or repair the benches. There was a sense of care for the place itself simply because it was a place that embodied our sense of belonging as a community. I love #Placemaking and we should thank all the passionate individuals and organisations trying to save and reignite what once was so natural to people and communities. Let's rethink the way we see, design and share PLACE!
