People with disabilities and their families here in Rathdown are really struggling to get the supports that they need. Our disability policy has been designed with the principles of the Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in mind. It is a human rights based approach to disability, where we recognise that everybody in society has the right to participate, and that those people who have disabilities have additional barriers to participation. Therefore, as a State, we need to step in and make sure that participation can happen in all areas, including education, health, housing, and employment. Some of the things that we are proposing in this new policy are that we need to see a disability ombudsman and we need to see better payments to recognise the cost of disability. Everything we do around disability, we ensure is informed by disabled persons’ organisations. #Disability #DublinRathdown #SocDems #GE24

Today is the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. I often hear "the ADA would never be passed today." This is unfortunately true. Instead of seeing bipartisan efforts to expand disability rights, we've seen efforts to roll back the ADA, from attempts to gut the ADA through the court system to legislation like HR 620, the ADA Education and Reform Act, which passed the House of Representatives in 2018 with the support of Republicans and some Democrats. We need more disabled progressives who are working to expand disability rights as candidates, elected officials, and campaign staff, which is why Neal Carter and I co-founded Disability Victory last year. Although the ADA passed 34 years ago and has been critically important to securing our civil rights, it wasn't a magic wand. Disabled people face ableism and inaccessibility on the campaign trail and in the political arena. We are working to dismantle these barriers to empower more disabled people to lead. Calling all disabled progressives and allies: visit our newly revamped resources page to access our ever-growing library of accessible trainings and best practices at https://lnkd.in/eCxbqNmG. Please consider supporting our work! As a small organization that is still working to become sustainable while prioritizing accessibility, every single dollar makes a difference: https://lnkd.in/eqQdEKMy #DisabilityPrideMonth #ADA #Accessibility

National Disability Independence Day occurs every year on July 26, commemorating the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which protects people with disabilities from discrimination of all kinds. In the disability community, able-bodied people are referred to as “temporarily able-bodied” as a reminder that a disability can occur to anyone and anytime– especially later on in life. GLP Attorneys is proud to support clients with disabilities and advocate for their rights. On National Disability Independence Day, we encourage you to learn more about ADA and how you can break stigmas and barriers within your community. It is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! In honor of this month, Paul Aronsohn has written an essay highlighting the impact certain words have on the perceptions of people with disabilities in the workforce. 🌟 Embrace the future of disability policy in Australia! With a decade in the industry, we know its complexities. A new National Disability Strategy post-2024 is key. Reflect on past wins and areas for improvement. An independent review a decade ago highlighted progress and implementation gaps. Let's use this as a starting point for better policies. Draw strength from past and present leaders. Australia's commitment to supporting the disabled and marginalised shines globally. Let's work together for a brighter, inclusive future. #DisabilityPolicy #Australia 🌟
